Ignition Coil
The Gen 6 Premium Perma-Tune CDI module makes diagnostics easier by providing onboard diagnostics that are automatically displayed by two coloured LED function lights.
These LED lights assist in diagnosing both the ignition module and the car. The green LED is a status indicator that can flash diagnostic fault codes. The red LED is a strobe light that flashes each time the coils fires in the same manner as a timing light which is especially useful for detecting engine misfire.
The LED function lights are mounted in the harness electrical connector and can only be seen with a mirror while the module is powered up.
As an additional feature of the Perma-Tune Premium module, there are three self-resetting overload protectors that protect your Perma-Tune and your car from overload damage. The overload protectors are hidden underneath the ignition module so they do not spoil the original look of the part.
Distributor with Harness
Distributors wear out and rob your engine of the horsepower it was intended to produce. Worse yet, they can leave you stranded or even damage the crankshaft ring gear. Forget about rebuilding an outdated distributor with hard to find parts when you can replace it with modern technology that looks original. Replacing that worn out distributor has never been easier with the Perma-Tune Bespoke distributor, for the 2.0 L and 2.2 L engine. There are no wires to cut and splice: the distributor has the electrical harness built in and features the original equipment compatible connectors for a plug and play installation.
Simply mount the ignition module to the relay panel where the later model cars had the module mounted and then plug the distributor harness connector into the Perma-Tune module. The power, ground, tachometer and coil connections are made at the existing coil wires. The harness has loop connections that allow joining the wires without having to cut and splice the car harness wires. The Perma-Tune distributor harness is made using the same vinyl sleeve loom construction as the original wiring for that factory original look.
The Perma-Tune Bespoke Porsche distributor is an exact fit replacement part that will drop right into the engine. Setting the static timing is easy with the built in trigger point LED that lets you know when the rotor is pointing in the right direction. Idle timing is set in exactly the same way as the factory manual indicates and the factory mechanical and vacuum curves are preprogrammed into the distributor. The mechanical vacuum can is replaced with a reliable MAP sensor that is fully programmable to perform advance or retard vacuum functions. It just doesn't get any easier than this.
Ignition Coil
The Perma-Tune Black Ignition Coil is specifically designed to operate with all Perma-Tune modules to maximize the performance and service life of your Perma-Tune ignition module. It has the period correct look for the Porsche 911SC with a brown top and black body and will fit the original mounting bracket and wiring harness of the car.
The Black ignition coil is very rugged and can resist the heat and vibration that it will encounter on a vintage car engine. Triple seals insure that the dielectric oil inside the coil will not leak out. The high Voltage tower is extra thick to resist arcing and will still fit the original spark plug wire boot. The internal components of the coil are designed to resist deterioration to provide a long life.

The OE Match Console for Twin Ignition Coil is a replacement mounting bracket designed to securely locate two ignition coils within the engine compartment of classic Porsche 911 and 912 models.
Fits:- Porsche 911 1965-1968 2.0L / 912 SWB (F)
- Porsche 911 1968-1973 2.2L / 2.4L / 2.7L RS LWB (F)
The console provides a stable mounting platform for a twin-coil ignition arrangement, keeping both coils correctly positioned and helping prevent excessive movement caused by engine vibration and vehicle motion.
It is particularly suitable for restoration, ignition-system refurbishment or vehicles equipped with a twin-coil or compatible twin-ignition configuration where the original bracket is damaged, corroded, modified or missing.
What This Product Does:
Ignition coils convert the vehicle's low-voltage electrical supply into the much higher voltage required by the ignition system to create a spark at the spark plugs.
This console does not generate or control the spark itself. Instead, it securely supports the two ignition coils used in the relevant ignition arrangement.
Its functions include:
- Securely mounting two ignition coils
- Maintaining correct coil positioning
- Reducing excessive vibration and movement
- Supporting orderly ignition-wire routing
- Reducing strain on electrical terminals and wiring
- Preventing coils from contacting surrounding engine components
- Maintaining a clean and secure engine-bay installation
- Providing a suitable mounting arrangement for twin-coil ignition systems
A secure mounting platform is important because ignition components are continually exposed to engine vibration and heat.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Although the console is a relatively simple metal component, age, corrosion, vibration and previous modifications can cause deterioration.
Common signs that replacement may be required include:
- Visible rust or heavy corrosion
- Cracked or broken mounting points
- Bent or distorted console
- One or both ignition coils becoming loose
- Excessive coil vibration while the engine is running
- Rattling from the engine compartment
- Enlarged or damaged mounting holes
- Missing or loose mounting hardware
- Ignition wiring being stretched or poorly routed
- Coils contacting nearby components
- Difficulty securely mounting both ignition coils
- Evidence of improvised or incorrect previous repairs
- Missing original mounting console
Ignition problems such as misfires or weak spark are not necessarily caused by the bracket itself. The coils, wiring, distributor and other ignition components should also be checked where running problems are present.
Why Replacement Matters:
Ignition coils should remain securely mounted during engine operation.
If the mounting console is bent, cracked or heavily corroded, the coils may vibrate excessively. Continued movement can place additional stress on electrical terminals, high-voltage leads and associated wiring.
A poorly secured coil can also move into contact with surrounding engine components, potentially causing chafing, damaged insulation or unreliable electrical connections.
Replacing a damaged console helps restore:
- Secure twin-coil mounting
- Correct ignition component positioning
- Reduced vibration
- Proper wiring and lead routing
- Reduced mechanical stress on electrical connections
- A tidy, factory-style engine-bay installation
For restored or modified classic Porsche models using a twin-coil ignition arrangement, a correctly fitted mounting console also provides a much safer and more professional installation than improvised brackets or unsupported coils.

Ignition Coils – Reliable Spark and Power Delivery for Porsche Engines
Ignition coils are essential components in your Porsche’s ignition system, transforming low-voltage power from the battery into the high-voltage energy required to ignite the air-fuel mixture inside the engine cylinders. A healthy ignition coil ensures smooth acceleration, efficient combustion, and consistent engine performance.
At Design911, we supply a wide range of genuine and high-quality ignition coils for various Porsche models including 356, 911, 924, 944 and 928. Each coil is precision-engineered for durability, heat resistance, and optimal spark performance, ensuring your Porsche continues to deliver the power, efficiency, and reliability it was designed for.
What Do Ignition Coils Do?
Ignition coils play a crucial role in your Porsche’s
ignition system by converting 12-volt battery power into up to 40,000 volts to
fire the spark plugs. Their main functions include:
- Generating high-voltage spark energy for combustion.
- Delivering consistent ignition timing across all cylinders.
- Supporting smooth acceleration and engine efficiency.
- Reducing emissions by ensuring complete combustion.
Modern Porsche models may feature coil-on-plug systems that provide precise, individual spark control for each cylinder — maximising performance and responsiveness.
Why Do Ignition Coils Fail?
Over time, ignition coils are subjected to high voltage,
heat, and vibration, which can cause wear or internal damage. Common causes of
failure include:
- Heat
degradation of coil insulation or wiring.
- Moisture
intrusion leading to short circuits.
- Age-related
electrical fatigue in coil windings.
- Faulty
spark plugs causing excessive resistance and strain.
- Corrosion or poor electrical connections.
Typical symptoms include engine misfires, rough idling, loss of power, difficulty starting, or an illuminated check engine light.
Why Replace Faulty Ignition Coils?
A failing ignition coil can cause poor fuel economy, misfires, or damage to the catalytic converter. Replacing worn or damaged coils restores proper spark strength, combustion efficiency, and overall engine performance.
Benefits of replacement include:
- Smoother acceleration and stronger performance.
- Reduced misfires and improved fuel economy.
- Lower emissions and smoother idle.
- Long-lasting, manufacturer-quality reliability.
All ignition coils in our range are made using high-grade materials and advanced insulation technology, ensuring consistent voltage delivery, heat resistance, and dependable performance under demanding conditions.
1. What does an ignition coil do in a Porsche?
The ignition coil converts the car’s 12-volt battery power
into a high-voltage spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in each cylinder.
This ensures smooth engine operation, efficient combustion, and reliable
performance.
2. What are the symptoms of a bad ignition coil?
Common signs of a failing ignition coil include engine
misfires, rough idling, reduced acceleration, poor fuel
economy, and a check engine light. You may also notice hesitation or
vibration when accelerating.
3. Can I drive my Porsche with a bad ignition coil?
Driving with a failing ignition coil is not recommended.
It can cause engine misfires, loss of power, and long-term damage
to spark plugs or the catalytic converter. Replacement should be done promptly
to avoid costly repairs.
4. How long do ignition coils last on a Porsche?

miles, depending on driving conditions and maintenance. Regular spark plug
replacement and avoiding moisture exposure can extend their lifespan.
