Replacing that worn out distributor has never been easier with the Perma-Tune distributor for the 356 engine
Distributors wear out and rob your engine of the horsepower it was intended to produce. Worse yet, they can leave you stranded or even damage the crankshaft ring gear.
Forget about rebuilding an outdated distributor with hard to find parts when you can replace it with modern technology that looks original. There are no wires to cut and splice: the distributor has the electrical harness built in and features the original equipment compatible connectors for a plug and play installation.
Simply mount the ignition module to the relay panel where the later model cars had the module mounted and then plug the distributor harness connector into the Perma-Tune module. The power, ground, tachometer and coil connections are made at the existing coil wires. The harness has loop connections that allow joining the wires without having to cut and splice the car harness wires.
The Perma-Tune distributor harness is made using the same vinyl sleeve loom construction as the original wiring for that factory original look.
This Perma-Tune Porsche distributor is an exact fit replacement part that will drop right into the engine. Setting the static timing is easy with the built in trigger point LED that lets you know when the rotor is pointing in the right direction.
Idle timing is set in exactly the same way as the factory manual indicates and the factory mechanical and vacuum curves are preprogrammed into the distributor. The mechanical vacuum can is replaced with a reliable MAP sensor that is fully programmable to perform advance or retard vacuum functions.
It just doesn't get any easier than this.
This is where the fun starts
Street tune your car for maximum performance using your smart phone.
Download the free TUNE + app to your phone and connect it to the Perma-Tune distributor via Bluetooth.
Using the TUNE + app, you can read and store the ignition curves, modify them and share them with others. The app even has an ignition lock feature that prevents unauthorized use of the car. Do more than just a onetime engine tuning. Engine programs are so easy to create and load into the car that you can make your own library of programs for different uses.
For instance, you could create a de-tuned engine program for a novice driver, a super tune program for yourself or a valet tune program for the parking attendant. Get the most from engine upgrades like headers, intake, and many other engine modifications by creating custom ignition maps.
The possibilities are endless.

Distributor Mounting Clamp for 123Ignition Distributor
Securely install a 123Ignition distributor into a Porsche
356 or 912 3-piece engine case with this upgraded OE Match Aluminium
Distributor Mounting Clamp.
Fits:
- Porsche 912 SWB 1965-1968 (F)
- Porsche 356 1950-55
- Porsche 356A 1955-59
- Porsche 356B 1959-63
- Porsche 356C 1963-65
Specifically designed for use with a 123Ignition distributor, this mounting clamp replaces the original thin 2mm distributor clamp and separate spacer ring arrangement. Its wider 9mm clamping surface provides improved support and more even pressure distribution around the distributor.
The design also helps ensure that the distributor sits at the correct height and rests properly against the engine housing, preventing it from being installed too deeply and incorrectly loading against the distributor drive shaft.
What Does the Distributor Mounting Clamp Do?
The distributor mounting clamp secures the distributor in its correct position within the engine case.
Once the ignition timing has been set, the clamp holds the distributor securely so it cannot rotate or move during engine operation.
When installing a 123Ignition distributor into a classic Porsche 356 or 912 engine, correct positioning is particularly important. The distributor needs to sit at the correct depth within the housing while engaging correctly with the distributor drive.
This upgraded clamp helps:
- Secure the 123Ignition distributor correctly
- Maintain the correct distributor installation height
- Distribute clamping pressure more evenly
- Prevent unwanted distributor movement
- Support accurate ignition timing
- Prevent the distributor from being mounted too deeply
- Provide a more secure mounting arrangement than the original thin clamp
Why Is This Clamp Recommended for 123Ignition Distributors?
The original Porsche distributor clamp has a clamping surface of only approximately 2mm.
When used with a 123Ignition distributor, this narrow clamping surface can create installation problems. In particular, the original clamp can potentially move into the distributor groove rather than providing the intended support.
This upgraded aluminium version increases the clamping surface to 9mm.
The wider contact area provides better pressure distribution and helps ensure that the distributor rests correctly against the engine housing rather than sitting too low and standing on the drive shaft.
9mm Clamping Surface
One of the main improvements is the substantially wider
clamping area.
Original-style clamp: approximately 2mm
Upgraded mounting clamp: 9mm
The increased width provides a more stable contact surface and prevents the clamp from slipping into the distributor groove.
This creates a more positive and secure installation for the 123Ignition distributor.
Correct Distributor Installation Height
A distributor should not be supported by the drive shaft itself.
If a 123Ignition distributor is fitted too deeply into the engine case, it can stand on the distributor drive shaft rather than correctly resting against the engine housing.
This mounting clamp is designed to help establish the correct position, ensuring the distributor is properly supported by the housing while maintaining correct engagement with the drive mechanism.
Alternative to a Spacer Ring
When installing a 123Ignition distributor into a Porsche 356 or 912 3-piece engine case, the use of either a suitable spacer ring or this dedicated mounting clamp is recommended.
This upgraded clamp provides an integrated solution, replacing the original thin clamp and spacer ring arrangement with a single purpose-designed aluminium component.
Porsche 356 / 912 123Ignition Distributor Mounts & Electronic Ignition Upgrades
Upgrading a Porsche 356 or 912 to a 123Ignition electronic distributor is a popular way of introducing modern ignition control while retaining the basic distributor-based layout of the original engine.
Correct installation is essential. The distributor must engage correctly with the drive while sitting at the intended height against the engine housing.
The original thin distributor clamp was designed around the original distributor arrangement and is not necessarily the ideal solution when installing a modern 123Ignition unit.
This purpose-designed aluminium mounting clamp provides a 9mm clamping surface, improving support and pressure distribution while helping maintain the correct distributor position.
It is therefore a worthwhile addition when installing a 123Ignition distributor into a Porsche 356 or 912 3-piece engine case.

Distributors – Precision Ignition Performance for Classic and Modern Porsche Models
Ignition distributors are vital components in Porsche engines equipped with traditional ignition systems. They control the timing and distribution of electrical current from the ignition coil to each spark plug — ensuring the right spark at the right time for optimal combustion, performance, and efficiency.
At Design911, we supply a wide range of genuine and high-quality distributors for classic and modern Porsche models, including 911, 924, 928, 944, 968, and early Boxster variants. Each distributor is engineered for precise ignition timing, consistent spark delivery, and reliable operation, restoring your Porsche’s performance and drivability.
What Do Distributors Do?
The distributor plays a key role in the ignition process by:
- Delivering
electrical current from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the
correct firing order.
- Controlling
spark timing based on engine speed and load.
- Ensuring
efficient combustion for smooth performance and reduced emissions.
- Maintaining optimal power delivery under all driving conditions.
In older Porsche models, the distributor also houses mechanical and vacuum advance mechanisms that fine-tune ignition timing — a crucial factor for performance and reliability.
Why Do Distributors Fail?
Over time, mechanical and electrical wear can cause
distributors to degrade or fail. Common issues include:
- Worn
bearings or shafts causing misalignment.
- Cracked
distributor caps allowing moisture or dirt intrusion.
- Faulty
rotor arms or carbon tracking leading to weak or inconsistent spark.
- Corrosion
inside the cap or on electrical contacts.
- Failed advance mechanisms causing timing inaccuracies.
Symptoms of distributor problems include misfiring, rough idling, engine hesitation, poor fuel economy, or difficulty starting the engine.
Why Replace a Faulty Distributor?
A worn or damaged distributor can cause poor performance and ignition failure. Replacing it ensures smooth engine operation, efficient fuel use, and reliable spark delivery.
Benefits of replacement include:
- Restored ignition timing accuracy.
- Improved fuel efficiency and throttle response.
- Elimination of misfires and hard starting.
- Manufacturer-quality construction and long-lasting reliability.
Our range includes complete distributor assemblies, caps, rotors, and rebuild kits, offering performance and reliability that meet or exceed Porsche’s engineering standards.
1. What does a distributor do in a Porsche engine?
A distributor controls when and how electrical current
from the ignition coil reaches each spark plug. It ensures the spark occurs at
the correct time in the combustion cycle, maximising power, efficiency, and
engine performance.
2. What are the symptoms of a bad distributor?
Common signs include rough idling, stalling, misfiring,
poor acceleration, or difficulty starting. Inconsistent spark
delivery or timing problems caused by worn or damaged distributor parts can
also trigger these symptoms.
3. Can I repair a Porsche distributor, or should I
replace it?
Some distributors can be repaired using replacement caps,
rotors, or advance mechanism parts, but if the shaft or housing is worn, a
complete replacement is recommended. A new manufacturer-quality distributor
ensures long-term reliability and precision ignition timing.
4. How often should the distributor cap and rotor be
replaced?
For older Porsche models with mechanical ignition, the cap
and rotor should typically be inspected every 10,000–15,000 miles and
replaced every 30,000–50,000 miles, depending on use and condition.
Regular maintenance helps prevent misfires and poor performance.
