Crankcase Breather System (Air/Oil Separator)
The crankcase breather system, also known as the air/oil separator (AOS), is a critical engine component that should be replaced every 30,000 miles—or sooner if signs of failure appear.
When the system fails, it can cause:
- Vacuum leaks due to cracked hoses or a damaged air/oil separator
- Oil consumption and fouled spark plugs, as oil is drawn into the intake
- Increased crankcase pressure, which can lead to gasket leaks and other engine issues
Preventative Maintenance
Preventative maintenance is always the best approach. Our comprehensive Crankcase Breather Hose Kit includes all the components you need to replace the system properly. We also recommend performing an engine oil change at the same time to ensure peak performance and longevity.

The AOS is basically a small diaphragm distillery which distills the minute amounts of oil mist in the crankcase, liquifies it and sends it back to the crankcase. The "clean" air is now sent into the air intake (after the throttle body) to be burned off by the engine.
When the AOS starts to fail it cannot separate all of the oil out of the mist and some liquid oil is sent to the air intake.
A few drops of oil is enough to generate the GREAT SMOKE BOMB for which our cars are famous for.
A big smoke bomb once in a while is completely normal, due to the architecture of the flat-6 engine, which may let a drop of oil flow into one of the combustion chambers sporadically.

The kit combines an OE Match oil cooler (radiator) with a full set of gaskets, seals, O-rings, fasteners, and fittings sourced from genuine Porsche OEM parts - ensuring correct sealing, fitment, and long-lasting performance.
Fits:
Porsche 996 Carrera 3.4L / 3.6L 1998 - 2005
Porsche 997.1 Carrera 3.6L 2005 - 2008
Diagram Ref No. 18, 18, 20, 21, 30, 31 and 32.
This comprehensive service kit centers around the OE Match engine oil cooler (OE ref part no. 99610702559) - a direct-fit cooling radiator that exchanges heat between engine oil and the coolant circuit to keep oil temperatures within proper limits under all driving conditions. In addition to the cooler itself, the kit includes authentic Porsche OEM parts necessary for a proper installation and leak-free operation.
Kit Includes:
• OE Match Engine Oil Cooler - OE ref no 99610702559
• Porsche Genuine hose - 99610623053
• Porsche Genuine Seals - 99970754740 and 99970738940
• Porsche Genuine hex screw - N10546403
• Porsche Genuine hose clamps - 99951255400 and 99951265209
These genuine parts are matched with the OE Match cooler to ensure factory-level sealing and durability, removing the guesswork from sourcing the correct components for an engine oil cooler service.
The engine oil cooler and its associated seals and hardware are subject to thermal cycling, pressure variation, and long-term exposure to heat and chemicals. Over time, coolers can become corroded, clogged, or internally separated, and seals can dry out, harden, or fail. This leads to:
• Oil leaks
• Elevated oil temperatures
• Reduced lubrication efficiency
• Possible engine damage from overheating or loss of oil pressure
Replacing the entire oil cooler and related seals at the same time delivers a comprehensive refresh of the system - reducing the risk of repeat leaks, improving cooling efficiency, and helping prolong engine life.
When to replace. Install this oil cooler service kit when:
• You detect oil or coolant leaks near the oil cooler
• The vehicle has high mileage with original components
• You’re experiencing oil temperature fluctuations or overheating conditions
• You are performing a coolant system or engine refurbishment
• Internal oil cooler passages show blockage or contamination

What This Product Does:
- The breather hose is part of the engine’s ventilation or crankcase/air-oil management system. In this case, it's described as being located at the top of the oil-cooler, which may mean it connects the crankcase ventilation or engine breather output back into the intake or another system.
- Its main function: to provide a path for gases (blow-by, vapor, pressure) from the engine or oil-cooler area back into the intake system or safe discharge path.
- The hose must withstand engine heat, pressure/vacuum cycles, vibrations, and exposure to oil or vapour, and provide a leak-free connection.
- Proper functioning helps maintain correct crankcase pressure, prevents undue pressure build-up or vacuum, helps control emissions, keeps the oil cooler circuit operating correctly, and ensures the engine’s ventilation system does not allow unintended air or oil vapour to escape or enter in the wrong way.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
- Oil vapour or smell around the engine compartment, especially near the oil cooler area or hose routing, indicating leakage of crankcase gases.
- Visible cracks, splits, brittleness, or hose collapse — old hoses can harden, crack or collapse internally causing blockage or leakage.
- Unusual engine behaviour: e.g., increased oil consumption, engine smoking slightly, or unusual intake/vacuum behaviour — if ventilation is compromised.
- Check engine or emission warnings: A compromised breather hose may lead to induction of unmetered air or vapours, affecting engine management.
- Oil cooler area contamination: Because the hose is described as located at the top of the oil cooler, if oil or vapour-contaminated deposits are visible there, the hose may be failing.
- Maintains correct engine ventilation: A good breather hose ensures proper crankcase/ventilation flow, and prevents pressure build-up or vacuum conditions that can lead to leaks or part failures (seals, gaskets).
- Protects the oil-cooler circuit and engine components: Because this hose is located at the oil-cooler top, replacing it helps ensure the oil cooler and associated hoses remain uncontaminated by vapour or oil mist escaping via degraded hoses.
- Improves reliability: Since these hoses are subject to heat, pressure and ageing, replacing them proactively avoids sudden failure, which could leave the car stranded or cause engine issues.

Premium Oil System Parts for Complete Engine Rebuilds and Reliable Lubrication
During an engine rebuild, the oil system becomes one of the most important areas to inspect, refresh and upgrade. Oil system parts—including pumps, coolers, pressure valves, lines, housings and seals—ensure the engine receives stable lubrication and temperature control throughout its operating range. A healthy oil system protects internal components from friction, overheating and premature wear, making these parts vital for long-term engine reliability.
Whether you’re rebuilding a classic unit, upgrading for improved performance or addressing age-related wear, quality lubrication components play a crucial role in achieving a durable and efficient engine.
What Oil System Parts Do
Oil system components are designed to work together to
maintain consistent oil pressure, smooth circulation and effective cooling.
Their functions include:
- Circulating
oil throughout the engine to reduce friction
- Maintaining
correct oil pressure for hydraulic lifters, bearings and timing
components
- Cooling
and stabilising oil temperatures during high-demand driving
- Filtering
contaminants to protect moving parts
- Preventing
leaks and ensuring efficient oil routing through hoses, pipes and
galleys
- Supporting high-performance conditions with upgraded flow and pressure capabilities
A fully functioning oil system is essential to protect the engine’s most sensitive internals.
Why Oil System Parts Commonly Fail
As engines age or face repeated heat cycles, oil system
components begin to weaken.
The most common reasons for failure include:
- Wear
of internal oil pump gears or rotors leading to reduced pressure
- Sludge
buildup restricting oil flow
- Heat
damage weakening seals, gaskets and hoses
- Cracked
or corroded oil lines causing leaks
- Blocked
oil coolers reducing temperature-control capacity
- Faulty
pressure relief valves creating low or inconsistent pressure
- Damage from contaminated, old or low-quality oil
Any of these issues can lead to lubrication loss, overheating, bearing wear or catastrophic engine damage.
Why Oil System Parts Should Be Replaced During an Engine Rebuild
When rebuilding an engine, replacing worn oil system parts
with high-quality, precision-built alternatives designed to match or exceed
original performance standards ensures the engine is protected from the
first startup forward.
Benefits include:
- Restored oil pressure and circulation efficiency
- Improved protection for bearings, pistons and camshafts
- Enhanced temperature control for high-load driving
- Reduced risk of oil leaks or contamination
- Longer engine life and improved reliability
- A safer, cleaner and more stable break-in process
Upgrading or refreshing the oil system is one of the most cost-effective ways to secure long-term engine performance.
