Air Conditioning Compressor
Restore factory air conditioning performance and driving
comfort with this OE Match Air Conditioning Compressor for the
Porsche 928 model range from 1980 to 1992. As the central component of the
vehicle's climate control system, the compressor is responsible for circulating
and compressing refrigerant, enabling the system to produce cold air and
maintain comfortable cabin temperatures.
Fits:
- Porsche 928 4.5L 1980-82
- Porsche 928S 4.7L 1981-83
- Porsche 928S2 4.7L 1984-86
- Porsche 928S4 5.0L 1987-92
- Porsche 928GT 5.0L 1989-91
- Porsche 928GTS 5.4L 1992-95
The Porsche 928 was designed as a high-performance grand touring car capable of covering long distances in comfort. A properly functioning air conditioning system is an essential part of that experience, particularly during summer driving and long-distance touring.
Manufactured to OE Match specifications, this compressor provides dependable performance, direct-fit installation and reliable operation for both maintenance and restoration projects.
What Does the Air Conditioning Compressor Do?
The air conditioning compressor is often described as the heart of the AC system.
Its primary functions include:
- Compressing refrigerant gas
- Circulating refrigerant through the AC system
- Creating the pressure differential required for cooling
- Supporting efficient cabin temperature control
- Enabling cold air production
- Assisting dehumidification of cabin air
- Maintaining climate control performance
Without a functioning compressor, the air conditioning system cannot effectively cool the vehicle interior.
Why Do Air Conditioning Compressors Fail?
Air conditioning compressors contain moving internal components that are subjected to heat, pressure and continuous operation.
Common causes of failure include:
- Internal bearing wear
- Compressor clutch failure
- Refrigerant loss Lack of lubrication
- Seal deterioration Internal contamination
- Corrosion from prolonged inactivity
- General age-related wear
On older vehicles such as the Porsche 928, years of service and periods of inactivity can accelerate compressor deterioration.
Symptoms of a Failing Air Conditioning Compressor
Common warning signs include:
- Air conditioning blowing warm air
- Reduced cooling performance
- Compressor clutch failing to engage
- Grinding, squealing or rattling noises
- Refrigerant leaks
- Intermittent AC operation
- Excessive vibration
- Unusual engine bay noises when AC is activated
These symptoms should be investigated promptly to prevent further damage to the air conditioning system.
When Should the Compressor Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended when:
- The compressor has seized
- Internal compressor damage is identified
- The clutch assembly has failed
- Cooling performance cannot be restored through servicing
- Significant refrigerant leaks are present
- Performing a complete AC system overhaul
- Restoring a long-term stored vehicle
- Contamination has entered the system
Many Porsche specialists recommend replacing the receiver dryer and inspecting system seals whenever a compressor is replaced.
Why Replacement Matters
A worn or failing compressor can affect every component within the air conditioning system.
Benefits of replacement include:
- Restored cooling performance
- Improved cabin comfort
- Reduced compressor noise
- Better climate control efficiency
- Improved refrigerant circulation
- Increased system reliability
- Reduced strain on supporting components
- Restoration of factory AC performance
A properly functioning AC system enhances both comfort and the value of your Porsche 928.
