Installation instructions
The direct oil feed (DOF) solution uses a patent pending custom made Intermediate Shaft Flange that utilizes a direct oil feed to the original Intermediate Shaft Bearing. It uses an adapted pressure fed oil line from a positive oil pressure feed on the cylinder head directly to an opening in the custom Intermediate Shaft Flange. This feeds fresh oil directly to the open end of the IMS bearing (after removing the seal to expose the ball bearings on the IMS bearing). By using a positive oil feed from the engine's cylinder head valve cover, there will always be a consistent flow of oil directed to the open end of the intermediate shaft bearing.
This is a cost effective way to help protect against a possible IMS bearing failure, using the original bearing. The system, however can also be used when replacing the bearing with a new SKF steel ball bearing for added insurance with a new, zero mile bearing.

IMS Direct Oil Feed (DOF) – Enhanced Lubrication for Porsche Intermediate Shaft
The IMS Direct Oil Feed (DOF) upgrade delivers improved lubrication to the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing in Porsche water-cooled engines, addressing a known weak point in the factory lubrication system. By supplying controlled engine oil directly to the IMS bearing, the DOF system reduces bearing wear, improves durability and enhances engine reliability — making it an essential part of any thorough engine rebuild or preventive maintenance plan for 996, 987 and early 997 engines.
At Design911, we supply premium IMS Direct Oil Feed kits designed to integrate with your Porsche engine, providing consistent oil flow to the IMS bearing for long-term protection and peace of mind.
What Is an IMS Direct Oil Feed (DOF) System?
An IMS Direct Oil Feed (DOF) system is a modified lubrication solution that routes pressurised engine oil directly to the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing. Unlike the factory setup, which relies on indirect splash lubrication that may not consistently reach the IMS bearing, a DOF system ensures continuous, metered oil delivery to the bearing surface, improving lubrication under all driving conditions.
This upgraded oil feed system works with the existing engine oiling architecture to enhance bearing life, reduce heat build-up and decrease the risk of premature failure — particularly important in high-mileage, high-load or track-oriented vehicles.
Why Choose an IMS Direct Oil Feed Upgrade?
Owners and engine builders choose an IMS DOF
upgrade because it offers:
- Improved IMS bearing lubrication versus factory oiling
- Better long-term engine reliability and reduced wear
- Enhanced oil supply during high rpm or sustained load conditions
- Reasonable integration with existing rebuild and maintenance procedures
This makes IMS DOF systems an ideal upgrade during engine rebuilds, preventative overhauls or IMS bearing replacements, especially where longevity and performance are priorities.
When Should You Install an IMS Direct Oil Feed (DOF) System?
You should consider an IMS Direct Oil Feed
upgrade when:
- You are performing a major engine rebuild or overhaul
- Replacing a worn or problematic IMS bearing
- Servicing a high-mileage Porsche (996, Boxster, Cayman, early 997)
- Preparing your vehicle for track use or performance driving
In these cases, an IMS DOF system provides added insurance against IMS bearing wear, helping protect your engine investment.
At Design911, we supply quality IMS DOF parts engineered for consistent performance and long-term engine protection.
