Unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the seventh-generation 911 marked a significant evolution. Known as the 991.1, this model retained the iconic profile while introducing modern enhancements. With a longer wheelbase and a horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, the 991 showcased Porsche's commitment to engineering excellence.
Featuring a longer wheelbase and a seven-speed gearbox, the 991 Carrera 2 boasted a more efficient 3.4ltr flat-6 engine. Notable options included a 7-Speed automatic transmission, dynamic engine mounts, and a Sport Chrono Package with a dash-mounted analog stopwatch. This package also introduced a Sport Plus button, optimizing chassis, engine, and transmission settings for spirited driving. Launch Control was another exciting addition, available for automatic (PDK) cars.
The 991.1 debuted in 2012 on a new platform with updated headlights and taillights. Despite these modern touches, the timeless silhouette remained true to the original design, showcasing the 911's iconic status. Key features included round headlights with white DRL strips, complemented by three air-scoops in the bumper for added sportiness. The active wing, designed to enhance stability at high speeds, further emphasized the 911's performance pedigree.
Inside, the focus shifted towards luxury without compromising performance. The instrument cluster retained its center tachometer, accompanied by a TFT display for added functionality. Powering the 2012 Porsche Carrera was a 3.4ltr flat-six engine, paired with a world-first seven-speed manual transmission as standard, with an optional PDK (dual-clutch) transmission available.
While some drivers noted differences in the feel of the electric-assisted steering compared to the previous hydraulic system, the 911's electro-hydraulic system maintained a strong connection with the road, providing a balance between comfort and responsiveness. Overall, the 991.1 exemplified Porsche's dedication to refining its legendary sports car for the modern era.
