944 2.7L 8V 1988-89

The introduction of the Porsche 944 in 1982 marked a notable advancement over its predecessor, the 924.

Despite a marginally poorer drag coefficient, the 944 boasted enhanced speed, superior equipment, and refined features. With improved handling, enhanced stopping power, and heightened comfort, it delivered a more gratifying driving experience. The factory claimed an impressive acceleration time of less than 9 seconds for the 0–97 km/h (60 mph) sprint, according to "Porsche the Ultimate Guide" By Scott Faragher.

Thanks to its rear transaxle balancing the front-mounted engine, the 944 achieved nearly even front-to-rear weight distribution, with a ratio of 50.7% front/49.3% rear. Notably, North American-market models featured larger bumpers, with the front bumper sporting a larger rubber portion to comply with local regulations.

In mid-1985, the 944 underwent significant revisions, including a revamped interior with new dashboard and door panels, an embedded radio antenna, and an upgraded alternator boosting capacity from 90 to 115 amps. Other enhancements included increased oil sump capacity, new cast alloy control arms, a larger fuel tank, optional heated and powered seats, and the introduction of the Porsche HiFi sound system. Moreover, the mounting of the transaxle was revised to reduce noise and vibration, while the front windshield transitioned to a flush-mounted design. Additionally, the earlier "cookie cutter" style wheels were replaced with new "phone dial" style wheels, although Fuchs wheels remained available as an option.

By the 1987 model year, further advancements were made, including updates to the 944 Motronic DME system and the introduction of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and driver and front passenger airbags. The 944 Turbo led the way by offering airbags as standard equipment, with optional availability on other 944 models. The implementation of ABS necessitated a change in wheel offset to 52 mm (2.05 in), resulting in the discontinuation of Fuchs wheels as an option.

In 1988, Porsche upgraded the engine to a 2.7ltr version, offering a significant increase in power output and torque compared to the previous 2.5ltr version.
