CDI Module
The Gen 6 Perma-Tune for the 911SC comes in two models: Premium ignition module and the Basic ignition module. The Basic model is just that, basic: it performs only the same functions as the analog modules did back in the day. For the average street car, this may be all that is desired and of course is more affordable than the Premium model. It is however still a high performance part and is perfect for racing venues that do not allow programmable digital ignition systems. The Basic model has a smooth, more original looking housing than the Gen 5 cast housing.
Distributor
Replacing that worn out distributor has never been easier with the Perma-Tune Bespoke distributor for the 911SC 3.0L engine and other engines like the Porsche Turbo 930 that use the six pin ignition module. There are no wires to cut and splice: the distributor has the electrical harness built in and features the original equipment compatible connectors for a plug and play installation. Simply unplug the car harness connector from the ignition module and plug it into the matching connector of the distributor harness. Then plug the distributor harness connector into the Perma-Tune module and done. There is no way to make a mistake with this installation, the connectors will only plug in the right way. The harness connector has built in diagnostics lights that tell you when the ignition system has power and when the ignition module is making sparks. The blue connector LED is a power indicator and the red connector LED is a strobe light that flashes each time the ignition system makes a spark, just like a timing light.
Ignition Coil
he Perma-Tune Black Ignition Coil is specifically designed to operate with all Perma-Tune modules to maximize the performance and service life of your Perma-Tune ignition module. It has the period correct look for the Porsche 911SC with a brown top and black body and will fit the original mounting bracket and wiring harness of the car.
The Black ignition coil is very rugged and can resist the heat and vibration that it will encounter on a classic car engine. Triple seals insure that the dielectric oil inside the coil will not leak out. The high Voltage tower is extra thick to resist arcing and will still fit the original spark plug wire boot. The internal components of the coil are designed to resist deterioration to provide a long life.

CDI Module
The Gen 6 Perma-Tune for the 911SC comes in two models:Premium ignition module and the Basic ignition module.
The Premium ignition module features a smooth, matt finish that mimics the patina of the original aluminum die cast part. It provides full control over RPM limit, mechanical advance timing, power output, multi spark function and has many other features that can be programmed using a computer, tablet or smart phone. This module comes preprogrammed for the Porsche 911SC so programming changes are optional. The Gen 6 Premium Perma-Tune makes diagnostics easier by providing onboard diagnostics that are automatically displayed by two coloured LED function lights. These LED lights assist in diagnosing both the vehicle and the ignition module. The green LED is a status indicator that can flash diagnostic fault codes. The red LED is a strobe light that flashes each time the coils fires in the same manner as a timing light. This LED is especially useful for detecting intermittent engine misfire caused by wiring or distributor problems. The LED function lights are mounted in the harness electrical connector and can only be seen when the module is powered up. There are three self-resetting overload protectors that assist in troubleshooting while protecting your Perma-Tune from damage. The overload protectors are hidden underneath the ignition module so they do not spoil the original look of the part. Refer to the Diagnostics section of this web site for more information about the diagnostics system and overload protectors.

This comes preprogrammed for the Porsche 911SC so programming changes are optional. The programmable mechanical advance feature is very handy for restoring a distributor advance curve that has been distorted by worn mechanical parts without having to disassemble and repair the distributor.
DISTRIBUTOR TRIGGER SIGNAL
The second most common cause of SC engine ignition failure is the ignition trigger circuit. Since the ignition box is controlled by the magnetic pulse generator located inside the distributor, any disruption in the triggering signal will cause the ignition box to malfunction. Be aware that the connectors can push back in the housing. Pull the rubber boot back to inspect the connection between the box and harness.
Full disassembly and inspection of the distributor is highly recommended due to the intermittent nature of triggering problems. Pay special attention to the distributor trigger shielded cable ( green wire ), magnetic pulse generator magnet and magnetic pulse generator winding connection as these parts are known to fail in combination. An especially common problem is a broken magnet pole. Evidence of arching between the magnetic pulse generator magnet points indicates a defective rotor. In this case replace the rotor, magnetic pulse winding, green wire and ignition box. The Perma-Tune high performance triggering is so accurate that worn out distributor shaft bearings can be detected by the tachometer. This is indicated by the tachometer needle slightly bouncing at idle. Trigger signal problems can cause double triggering which results in a weak ignition spark. Due to the lower triggering resolution of the stock ignition box, some symptoms of trigger signal problems can be more evident after the Perma-Tune is installed. Refer to the vehicle maintenance manual for triggering signal wave form specifications and distributor repair instructions.
To quickly test the triggering circuit without the use of an oscilloscope: Unplug the harness connector from the ignition box. Refer to the 911SC Installation Instructions diagram, connect an Ohm meter between pins 3 and 6 of the harness connector. To prevent the possibility of misdiagnosis, tug on the green triggering signal wire located at the base of the distributor while viewing the meter. The published specification for the magnetic pulse generator is 600 Ohms +- 100. Our experience has shown that a variation of +- 25 Ohm indicates a need to repair defective connections or to replace the magnetic pulse generator windings.

This harness is designed to be a stand alone replacement wiring harness for the 911SC models using the 6 pin CDI system. Until now the only way to replace a damaged ignition harness on the SC models was to replace the entire engine harness. This is very expensive and time consuming to do. We have designed this harness to allow the mechanic to just replace the wiring harness that controls the ignition function of the vehicle. The harness will plug directly into the CDI Box, The Ignition distributor and coil. The only two connections that will require some plug dis-assembly are the 12V ignition connection at the rear fuse panel and the tachometer signal wire at the 14 pin plug connector. Both of these wires come with the correct connectors installed on the wires.

Classic Retrofit replacement CDI+ ignition offers you bespoke modern electronics in a standard looking package. The CDI+ unit requires no modifications to the original wiring harness or vehicle metalwork and is 'plug and play'.
The CDI+ is a direct replacement for the 3 pin and 6 pin Bosch units fitted to Porsche 911's between 1969 and 1983 (and turbo models to ~1988). All CDI+ units have a 48 MHz microprocessor onboard to control ignition timing.
Advanced Unit:
The advanced unit allows the adjustment/tuning of the ignition advance curve and other features by plugging in a laptop. This can be achieved by 'overlaying' a curve on top of the distributor weights/springs curve or by locking the distributor and replacing the curve completely. Either way, you can unlock the true potential of your engine by adjusting fuelling and having the ignition curve to match.
The CDI+ has all the features of the basic unit but allow more flexibility in adjustment:
-Fully programmable ignition advance curve.
-Hard RPM limiter with adjustable ignition cut schemes
-Soft RPM limiter with adjustable ignition retard
-Launch RPM limiter
-Double spark at all RPMs
-Max RPM tell tale
-Shift Light output
-Clutch pedal input
-Tacho calibration
-Upgradeable through firmware updates
