- Porsche 944 2.7L 8V 1988-89
Water pump, Thermostat, Cam & Balance Belt Kit Porsche 944 2.7L
Fits:Porsche 944 2.7ltr - 1988 to 1989
8V ENGINE WITH AUTO ADJUSTER
Changing the water pump, pulley, and belts on an older Porsche 944 is essential for maintaining the car’s performance and preventing expensive repairs down the line. Here’s why:
1. Water Pump: The water pump is crucial for keeping the engine cool by circulating coolant throughout the system. Over time, the seals can wear out, and the pump itself can become less efficient or even fail completely. A failed water pump can cause the engine to overheat, leading to severe engine damage, which is costly to repair. Since the water pump is typically driven by the timing belt, replacing it during a timing belt service is a preventive measure.
2. Pulley: The pulleys, including the ones for the timing belt and accessory belts, can degrade over time due to wear and tear. If a pulley starts to fail, it can cause the belt to misalign or slip, which can lead to loss of power to critical systems like the water pump, alternator, or power steering. A worn-out pulley might also cause abnormal noises (like squealing) or vibrations, and in the worst case, it can lead to belt failure or further engine damage.
3. Belts: The timing belt and accessory belts (serpentine or V-belts) stretch and wear over time. A snapped timing belt can cause catastrophic engine damage, especially on interference engines like the 944’s. The accessory belts keep things like the alternator, air conditioning, and power steering working properly, and if they break, you’ll lose those functions—and possibly risk engine overheating if the water pump is driven by one of those belts.
4. Preventive Maintenance: On older cars, these parts have a limited lifespan, and replacing them as part of regular maintenance helps avoid major issues. The 944 is a well-built car, but its aging components need attention. Replacing the water pump, pulleys, and belts before they fail ensures your car runs smoothly and can help avoid the inconvenience and cost of unexpected breakdowns.
5. Improved Reliability: By proactively replacing these parts, you improve the overall reliability of your 944, ensuring that you can enjoy it without worrying about the engine overheating or being stranded due to a failed belt or pulley. In short, regular replacement of the water pump, pulleys, and belts is part of smart ownership for an older Porsche 944, helping preserve the engine’s health and longevity.

Thermostat Insert with Aluminium Housing and O-Rings
Restore correct engine temperature control with this OE
Match Thermostat Insert. The thermostat regulates coolant flow between the engine and
radiator. It helps the engine reach operating temperature quickly when cold and
then maintains the correct temperature by controlling coolant circulation
through the radiator.

What Does the Thermostat Insert Do?
When the engine is cold, the thermostat remains closed to restrict coolant flow through the radiator, helping the engine warm up efficiently.
As coolant temperature rises, the thermostat opens and allows coolant to circulate through the radiator where excess heat can be removed.
A correctly operating thermostat helps:
- Maintain the correct engine temperature
- Allow faster engine warm-up
- Regulate coolant flow through the radiator
- Prevent excessive engine temperatures
- Support efficient engine operation
- Maintain consistent cooling system performance
Why Do Thermostats Fail?
Thermostats operate through thousands of heating and cooling cycles and can gradually deteriorate with age.
Common causes include:
- Internal mechanical wear
- Thermostat valve sticking
- Weakening of the temperature-sensitive element
- Coolant contamination or deposits
- Corrosion within the cooling system
- Overheating General age-related deterioration
A thermostat can fail either open or closed. A thermostat stuck open can cause the engine to run too cool, while one stuck closed can restrict coolant circulation and cause overheating.
When Should the Thermostat Be Replaced?
Replacement should be considered if:
- The engine takes unusually long to warm up
- Engine temperature remains below normal
- Engine temperature becomes too high
- Temperature readings fluctuate unexpectedly
- Cabin heater performance is poor
- Diagnostic testing indicates incorrect coolant temperature
- The thermostat is sticking or no longer opening correctly
- Cooling system repairs make replacement advisable
Thermostat replacement is also commonly considered during major cooling system maintenance, particularly on higher-mileage vehicles.
Important Cooling System Checks
Overheating or incorrect engine temperature is not always caused by the thermostat.
The coolant level, water pump, radiator, cooling fans, hoses and cooling system should also be inspected when diagnosing temperature problems.
Any coolant leaks should be repaired and the cooling system correctly filled and bled after thermostat replacement.
Porsche Cayenne, Macan & Panamera Thermostats
The thermostat is a key component of the Porsche engine cooling system, controlling coolant circulation according to engine temperature.
As Cayenne, Macan and Panamera models age, thermostats can become slow to operate or stick partially open or closed. Typical symptoms include slow engine warm-up, low operating temperature, fluctuating temperature readings or overheating.
When diagnosing Porsche cooling system problems, the thermostat should be checked alongside the water pump, radiator, coolant level and other cooling system components.
