Information
Track Rod.
OE Match track rod - also commonly referred to as a tie rod - which forms a critical link in the steering system. It connects the steering rack to the front wheel hub/knuckle, transmitting steering inputs from the rack to the wheels and helping ensure accurate, predictable directional control.
Sold each. Fits left and right side.
Fits:
Porsche 981 Boxster 2012 - 2016
Porsche 981C Cayman 2014 - 2016
Porsche 991 Carrera 2012 - 2016
Porsche 991 Turbo 2014 - 2016
Porsche 991 GT3 2014 - 2016
Diagram ref no 8
The track rod plays a vital role in steering and alignment:
• Transfers steering input from the steering rack to the wheel hub
• Maintains proper steering geometry through full suspension travel
• Helps preserve correct toe angle and stable handling
• Accommodates subtle movement with its ball joint end to allow free suspension articulation.
A properly functioning track rod ensures the car responds accurately to driver steering inputs and helps maintain straight-line stability. Worn or incorrect track rods can lead to poor steering feel, uneven tyre wear, and handling inconsistency.
Track rods (tie rods) are subject to wear due to constant steering motion, road shock, and joint loading. Over time, the inner/outer ball joint areas can develop play or looseness, which can cause:
• Steering play or vagueness
• Uneven tyre wear
• Poor alignment retention
• Reduced handling precision
• Wheel wander at speed
Replacing worn track rods with a quality OE Match component restores proper steering linkage integrity, aligns geometry correctly, and helps preserve consistent handling and tyre life.
When to replace. Replace the front track rod if:
• You experience steering looseness, wandering, or play
• There is uneven or rapid tyre wear
• Alignment cannot be held within tolerance
• You hear clunking or knocking from the front suspension under steering load
• During front suspension overhaul or steering rack removal

What This Part Does / Functions:
• Connects the steering rack / steering linkage to the front wheel hub assembly
• Transfers steering input to the front wheels
• Allows steering movement through the integrated ball joint
• Helps maintain correct toe alignment
• Supports precise steering response and handling
• Replaces a worn, loose, seized or damaged original track rod
• Helps correct play or looseness in the steering system
Why Replace This Part?
Track rods and tie rod ends are common wear items in the steering system. The ball joint is exposed to road shock, steering movement, water, dirt and general wear. Over time, the joint can develop play, the boot can split, or the threaded adjustment section can seize. A worn track rod can cause vague steering, knocking, uneven tyre wear or poor wheel alignment.
Common Symptoms of a Worn Track Rod
• Knocking or clunking from the front suspension / steering area
• Play in the steering wheel
• Loose or vague steering feel
• Uneven front tyre wear
• Vehicle pulling to one side
• Steering vibration
• Split or damaged ball joint dust boot
• Failed MOT / roadworthiness inspection due to steering joint play
• Toe alignment cannot be adjusted correctly.
When to Replace This Part
• If the ball joint has play or looseness
• If the dust boot is split or leaking grease
• If the track rod is bent, seized or damaged
• During front suspension or steering overhaul
• When replacing steering rack components
• If uneven tyre wear is caused by steering joint wear
• If the vehicle fails inspection due to track rod play
Where It Fits on the Car
This track rod fits in the front steering system, connecting the steering rack / linkage to the front wheel hub carrier area.
It fits left or right side, so the same part can be used on either side where specified.

The steering rack controls the front wheels by means of two track rods, terminated by replaceable joints - the "Track Rod Ends", attached to the swivel hubs. These will eventually wear, leading to problems with steering and handling, as well as being a failure point on the UK MOT and presumably on the statutory inspections in other countries.
