Track rod inner joints set of 2. Porsche 986 / 996
SET OF 2
Fits:
Porsche 986 Boxster 1997-05
Porsche 996 1998-05
Porsche 996 Turbo / GT2 / GT3
The steering rack controls the front wheels by means of two track rods, terminated by replaceable joints - the "Track Rod Ends", attached to the swivel hubs. These will eventually wear, leading to problems with steering and handling, as well as being a failure point on the UK MOT and presumably on the statutory inspections in other countries.

Information
Tie rod end
This Porsche Genuine OE Tie Rod End is an original factory steering and suspension component designed for the Porsche Cayenne 9YA (2018–2023). It forms the outer joint of the steering linkage, connecting the steering rack (via tie rod) to the wheel hub/steering knuckle. Manufactured to Porsche OE standards, it ensures precise fitment, durability, and correct steering geometry.
Sold individually, is suitable for both left and right sides.
Fits:
Porsche (9YA) Cayenne 2018 - 2023
Diagram ref no 2
The tie rod end transfers movement from the steering rack to the front wheels, allowing the driver to control direction accurately. It incorporates a ball joint, enabling smooth articulation as the suspension moves while maintaining steering precision.
This is essential for stable handling, accurate alignment, and responsive steering feedback
Functions & Technical Role
• Steering control: Transfers steering input from rack to wheels
• Articulation: Ball joint allows movement with suspension travel
• Alignment support: Maintains correct wheel tracking and geometry
• Handling stability: Ensures precise and predictable steering response
• OEM engineering: Built to Porsche tolerances for durability and performance
Typical tie rod ends are designed for front axle installation and must withstand constant load, vibration, and road forces.
Fitment / Position on Car
• Fitting position: Front axle
• Location: Outer steering linkage (between tie rod and wheel hub)
Tie rod ends are wear components exposed to road shock, vibration, and environmental conditions. Over time, they can develop play or wear, leading to:
• Loose or vague steering
• Uneven tyre wear
• Knocking noises from the front suspension
• Poor wheel alignment and handling
Replacing with a genuine Porsche OE tie rod end restores steering precision and ensures safe vehicle operation.

What This Product Does:
- Connects the steering rack to the front wheel hub assembly.
- Transfers steering input accurately to the front wheels.
- Allows suspension movement while maintaining steering control.
- Maintains correct front wheel alignment.
- Provides smooth and precise steering response.
- Supports vehicle stability during braking and cornering.
- Reduces unwanted steering play and vibration.
- Forms a critical part of the front steering system.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
- Steering wheel play or looseness.
- Knocking or clunking noises from the front suspension.
- Uneven or accelerated tyre wear.
- Vehicle pulling to one side.
- Vibration through the steering wheel.
- Poor steering response or reduced precision.
- Difficulty maintaining wheel alignment.
- Excessive movement in the ball joint during inspection.
- Split or damaged protective dust boot.
- MOT or vehicle inspection failure due to steering joint wear.
Why Replacement Matters:
- The front outer track rod is subjected to constant steering movement, road shocks, cornering loads and exposure to water, dirt and road salt. Over time, the internal ball joint and protective boot can wear, allowing contamination to enter and increasing joint play.
- A worn track rod can reduce steering accuracy, affect wheel alignment and accelerate tyre wear. Continued operation with excessive play may place additional strain on the steering rack and suspension components, while also compromising vehicle handling and safety.
- Replacing a worn front outer track rod restores precise steering response, correct suspension geometry and predictable vehicle handling. A genuine Porsche replacement guarantees factory-correct fitment, premium-quality materials and long-term durability, helping maintain the outstanding steering precision, safety and driving performance your Porsche was engineered to deliver.
