Information
Synchro ring 2nd gear, for 915 Gearbox.
This synchroniser ring that fits into the 915 gearbox of a Porsche 911. Its role is to match the rotational speed of a gear to the shaft before the dog teeth engage, enabling grind-free shifting, especially into 2nd gear.
Fits:
Porsche 911 2nd Gear Only 1974 - 1986 (915 Trans.)
Porsche 912E 1st-2nd Gears 1972 - 1976
Diagram Ref no 39.
• Function: The synchroniser ring helps match the speed of the transmission shaft and gear before engagement, enabling smooth shifting without gear clash.
• Position: Located inside the 915 manual gearbox, specifically associated with 1st/2nd gear synchronising assembly (diagram ref no 39)
• Benefit: Restores precise gear changes, reduces shifting effort, prevents gearbox noise or damage
Over time, the synchroniser ring’s friction surfaces wear, reducing its ability to align gear speeds. This can lead to gear grinding, difficulty selecting 2nd gear, or “pop-out” under load.
When to replaces:
• During a gearbox overhaul or rebuild of a 915 transmission.
• If you experience gear grinding, hard 2nd gear shifts, or gear pop-out.
• When you’re replacing other major gearbox components - installing a new synchro ring ensures correct engagement and long transmission life.
