Air-bag steering-wheel retaining frame — Porsche 986 / 993 / 996 (P/N 993.347.088.01)
This is the stamped metal bracket that mechanically secures
the air-bag module and horn contacts inside the steering wheel. It’s small and
simple, but it’s safety-critical — replace or refurbish it if it’s bent,
corroded, its bushings are badly worn, or it no longer gives a clean, even
mounting for the air-bag/horn. For cars with 4-spoke steering wheel.
To fit 1994 & 1995 993's the air bag needs to be changed for the later type or the bushes from this new part refitted into your old frame.

Why it should be replaced
Replace the retaining frame when any of the following applies:
- Physical damage / deformation — if the frame is bent, cracked or warped it will not hold the airbag securely and must be replaced.
- Corrosion or pitting — rusted bolt holes or mating surfaces reduce clamping strength and may fatigue the metal.
- Worn or damaged bushings/mounts — the frame often uses small bushes or locating features; if these are worn the airbag or horn can be loose or misaligned.
- Incorrect/previously fitted part — using the wrong variant (e.g., wrong wheel/airbag generation) will give incorrect fit and may prevent proper installation.
- During steering-wheel/airbag servicing — because the frame is handled during removal/reassembly, many technicians replace or refurbish it as preventative maintenance.
- Horn or seating problems — intermittent horn operation, rattles from the wheel, or an airbag module that does not sit flush are practical signals the frame should be checked and likely replaced.
Common issues / failure modes
- Loose or rattling airbag/horn when driving or over bumps (sign of poor mechanical retention).
- Horn only works intermittently or only when the wheel is twisted — may indicate poor contact path caused by misaligned or damaged frame.
- Airbag module not flush / appears offset — poor fit or warped frame.
- Difficulty reinstalling steering wheel or airbag (misaligned bolt holes or needing excessive force).
- Corrosion at bolt holes leading to stripped threads or reduced clamp force.
- Worn mounting bushings that permit rotational/axial play in the module.
