What This Product Does
The flexible bellows cover the moving rack ends and inner steering joints. They help exclude road grit and moisture while accommodating steering movement and keeping lubrication protected.
Functions
- Shield the covered steering components from contamination.
- Accommodate movement as the steering operates.
- Help protect lubricated inner joints from moisture exposure.
Symptoms of Fault
- Visible cracking, punctures or tears in the bellows.
- Loose attachment or contamination around the gaiter ends.
- Moisture or dirt found beneath the protective cover.
- Knocking where an exposed inner joint has developed wear.
Steering noise or looseness can have several causes. Inspect the rack and joints rather than assuming a replacement gaiter will resolve existing mechanical wear.
Why Replacement Matters
A damaged or poorly secured gaiter leaves the covered components exposed to water and abrasive debris. Renewing it restores the protective barrier, but cannot repair a worn joint or leaking rack. Check the inner joint and attachment points during the work.
FAQs
Will this fit every listed vehicle?
Confirm the installed rack reference: this kit is intended for the early rack specification.
Is alignment needed afterwards?
Have the wheel alignment checked if track rods are disturbed or their adjustment changes.
What should be inspected with the gaiter removed?
Check for inner-joint play, contamination and signs of rack leakage before fitting the replacement cover.

This boot encases the exposed portions of the steering rack, forming a protective barrier that keeps out dirt, dust, water, and road grime. By sealing the rack’s moving parts from external contaminants, it helps prevent premature wear, rust, and corrosion. Additionally, it helps retain the lubricating grease inside the rack assembly, ensuring smooth steering operation and reducing the risk of mechanical failure.
The steering rack boot is a low-cost part that plays a critical protective role. Over time, the original boot can crack, tear, or stiffen due to age, heat, and exposure to road conditions. Once compromised, contaminants like water, dirt, and salt can enter the rack housing, accelerating corrosion, wearing internal gears and bearings, and potentially causing rack failure or steering problems. Replacing boot ensures the rack remains protected, lubricated, and functions smoothly - helping avoid costly steering repairs or unsafe handling issues.
Consider replacing the boot if any of the following occur:
• The rubber bellows shows visible cracks, tears, splits or hardening.
• You notice grease leaking around the rack area - a sign the boot may have ruptured.
• There is dirt, water or debris accumulation near the rack, or signs of corrosion on components.
• Steering feels stiff, rough, or noisy, especially when turning - potentially indicating contamination or inadequate lubrication.
• You are performing steering or suspension maintenance, or restoring the car, and want to ensure long-term reliability.
