Mounted on the steering column behind the steering wheel, this combined switch assembly operates several essential driving functions, including the direction indicators, headlamp main-beam and dipped-beam selection, headlamp flashing and windscreen wiper controls.
Manufactured to Porsche's original equipment specifications, the switch provides the mechanical stalk controls and internal electrical contacts required to operate these systems safely and conveniently from the driver's position.
This particular version is designed for vehicles without the factory headlamp washer system, cruise control or airbag equipment. Porsche manufactured several similar steering column switch configurations, making it important to select the correct version for the vehicle's original specification.
During normal driving, the steering column switch allows the driver to operate the direction indicators, adjust the headlamp beam and activate the windscreen wipers without removing their hands unnecessarily from the steering wheel.
The switch also incorporates the relevant indicator cancelling mechanism, allowing the direction indicator to return to its neutral position after the steering wheel is turned back following a manoeuvre.
Over time, the original switch may become worn due to repeated operation, ageing electrical contacts, mechanical fatigue or damage to the internal switching mechanisms.
A faulty steering column switch may cause intermittent indicators, unreliable headlamp operation, non-functioning wipers or difficulty selecting the required control position.
Replacing a worn or defective switch with a Genuine Porsche component helps restore reliable operation of these essential vehicle controls and maintain the original steering column arrangement.
Ideal for electrical fault repairs, indicator and wiper switch replacement, steering column refurbishment and classic Porsche restoration projects, this Genuine Porsche Steering Column Switch provides a factory-specified replacement for compatible 944 models.
What This Product Does:
The steering column switch is a combined electrical control assembly fitted behind the steering wheel.
Its primary function is to allow the driver to operate several essential lighting and windscreen wiper systems through conveniently positioned control stalks.
When a stalk is moved, internal electrical contacts activate the appropriate vehicle circuit.
The direction indicator mechanism also incorporates a cancelling function that is designed to return the indicator to its neutral position after certain steering movements.
Its main functions include:
- Operating the direction indicators: Allows the driver to signal left and right turns.
- Controlling headlamp beam selection: Switches between dipped-beam and main-beam lighting.
- Operating the headlamp flasher: Provides momentary main-beam activation where fitted in the original configuration.
- Controlling windscreen wiper operation: Allows the driver to select the available wiper operating modes.
- Supporting windscreen cleaning: Provides the relevant wash/wipe control functions through the steering column assembly.
- Cancelling direction indicators: Incorporates the mechanical arrangement that helps return the indicator stalk to its neutral position after turning.
- Maintaining electrical circuit switching: Provides internal contacts for the relevant lighting and wiper functions.
- Supporting safe driving: Keeps frequently used controls conveniently accessible.
- Preserving original functionality: Maintains the factory steering column control arrangement specified by Porsche.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
The steering column switch is operated frequently during everyday driving and is subject to repeated mechanical movement and electrical switching.
Over time, internal contacts, springs, plastic components and stalk mechanisms may deteriorate.
Common symptoms of a worn or faulty steering column switch include:
- Direction indicators not working: One or both indicators may fail to activate when the stalk is moved.
- Intermittent indicator operation: The indicators may function inconsistently or require repeated stalk movement.
- Indicators failing to cancel: A damaged cancelling mechanism may prevent the indicator from returning to its neutral position.
- Indicators cancelling too early: Mechanical wear or damage may cause the stalk to return unexpectedly.
- Stiff or loose indicator stalk: Internal wear may make the lever difficult to move or prevent positive engagement.
- Headlamp main beam not operating: Worn switch contacts may prevent the headlights from changing to main beam.
- Dipped-beam selection problems: The headlamp switch may fail to maintain the selected lighting mode.
- Headlamp flashing not working: Damaged contacts may affect the momentary flasher function.
- Windscreen wipers not operating: A defective switch may fail to activate the wiper circuit.
- Intermittent wiper operation: The wipers may respond inconsistently to stalk movement.
- Incorrect wiper speed selection: Certain operating modes may no longer function correctly.
- Windscreen washer control problems: The washer function may fail to activate through the appropriate stalk operation.
- Burning smell or overheating: Damaged electrical contacts or excessive resistance may cause abnormal heat around the switch.
- Visible mechanical damage: Cracked stalks, damaged housings or broken retaining points may affect operation.
- Loose or damaged electrical connections: Deteriorated wiring connectors may interrupt the relevant circuits.
Why Replacement Matters:
Replacing a defective steering column switch is important for maintaining reliable operation of the Porsche 944's indicators, headlights and windscreen wipers.
These systems are essential for visibility, signalling and safe vehicle operation.
A worn switch may initially produce intermittent faults but can eventually stop operating completely, leaving the driver unable to activate the affected function.
For example, faulty indicator contacts can prevent other road users from receiving clear turning signals, while defective wiper controls may reduce visibility during poor weather.
Installing a Genuine Porsche replacement Steering Column Switch helps to:
- Restore reliable indicator operation: Ensure the direction indicators respond correctly to stalk movement.
- Maintain road safety: Restore essential signalling and lighting controls.
- Improve headlamp functionality: Address main-beam, dipped-beam or flasher faults caused by a defective switch.
- Restore windscreen wiper control: Reinstate the correct electrical switching for the wiper system.
- Support reliable windscreen cleaning: Maintain the intended washer and wiper control functions.
- Restore indicator cancellation: Replace worn cancelling components within the switch assembly.
- Eliminate intermittent switching faults: Address internal electrical contact deterioration.
- Improve control stalk operation: Restore a positive, consistent feel when selecting functions.
- Prevent further electrical problems: Replace damaged or overheating switch components before deterioration worsens.
- Maintain correct factory fitment: Use the switch specified for the vehicle's original equipment configuration.
- Preserve interior originality: Maintain the original Porsche steering column controls.
- Support classic Porsche restoration: Replace ageing electrical components during refurbishment.
- Maintain Genuine Porsche quality: Use an original equipment component designed for compatible Porsche 944 models.
Replacement is particularly recommended when diagnosis confirms defective internal contacts, broken stalk mechanisms, damaged indicator cancellation components or intermittent control operation.
