The OE MATCH Steering Column Bearing Support Bush is a replacement component designed to restore correct steering column bearing support, stability and alignment on classic Porsche 911 models manufactured between 1965 and 1989.
Fits:- Porsche 911 1965-89
Diagram Ref No 24
Manufactured to match the original equipment design and fitment, this support bush forms part of the steering shaft bearing mounting arrangement, helping maintain the correct positioning and support of the steering column assembly.
The steering column is an essential component of the vehicle's steering system, transmitting driver input from the steering wheel through the steering shaft to the steering mechanism. Correct bearing support is important for maintaining smooth steering operation, minimising unwanted movement and reducing vibration.
The bearing support bush provides a resilient mounting interface within the steering assembly, helping support the associated bearing and reduce unnecessary movement or vibration between connected components.
Over time, original rubber support bushes can deteriorate due to ageing, repeated steering inputs, vibration, environmental exposure and material fatigue. A worn, cracked or distorted bush may lose its ability to support the bearing correctly, potentially resulting in unwanted steering column movement, rattling or vibration.
Replacing a deteriorated steering column bearing support bush with an OE MATCH component helps restore the original mounting arrangement, maintain correct bearing positioning and support consistent steering operation.
Ideal for classic Porsche steering system maintenance, steering column refurbishment, steering rack restoration and complete vehicle restoration projects, this replacement bush offers original equipment-style fitment and reliable support.
What This Product Does:
The steering column bearing support bush is a mounting and supporting component within the vehicle's steering shaft assembly.
Its primary functions include:
- Supports the Steering Column Bearing: Provides the intended mounting support for the associated steering shaft bearing.
- Maintains Correct Bearing Positioning: Helps keep the bearing correctly located within its mounting arrangement.
- Reduces Unwanted Steering Movement: Helps minimise excessive movement caused by deterioration of the original bearing support.
- Absorbs Vibration: The resilient mounting material helps limit the transmission of minor vibrations through the steering assembly.
- Reduces Steering Rattles: Helps minimise vibration-related noises caused by a loose or deteriorated mounting.
- Supports Smooth Steering Operation: Maintains the bearing support necessary for consistent steering shaft movement.
- Maintains Steering Assembly Alignment: Helps preserve the intended positioning of the associated steering shaft and bearing components.
- Protects Surrounding Components: Reduces unnecessary mechanical movement that may contribute to wear on adjacent mounting components.
- Supports Steering System Stability: Contributes to maintaining a correctly assembled and supported steering system.
- Maintains Original Equipment Configuration: Replaces the factory rubber support bush without altering the original steering assembly arrangement.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Steering column bearing support bushes are exposed to continuous vibration, repeated steering movement and age-related rubber deterioration.
Over time, the original rubber material may harden, crack, deform or lose its ability to provide effective bearing support.
Common symptoms of a worn or failing steering column bearing support bush include:
- Excessive Steering Column Movement: Unusual movement may be noticeable within the steering shaft or bearing mounting area.
- Steering Wheel Vibration: Worn mounting material may contribute to additional vibration transmitted through the steering wheel.
- Steering Column Rattling: Rattling or vibration-related noises may develop around the steering shaft assembly.
- Knocking or Clicking Noises: Excessive movement within the bearing mounting arrangement may produce noises during steering operation or when driving over uneven surfaces.
- Loose or Unstable Steering Feel: Deteriorated support components may contribute to an imprecise or less secure steering feel.
- Cracked or Split Rubber: Visible cracking or splitting indicates deterioration of the original bush.
- Hardened or Brittle Material: Ageing rubber may lose its original flexibility and become more susceptible to damage.
- Distorted or Deformed Bush: The support bush may lose its original shape, affecting correct bearing positioning.
- Excessive Bearing Movement: The associated steering bearing may no longer be held securely within its intended mounting position.
- Squeaking or Rubbing Noises: Incorrectly supported components may create unwanted contact or friction during steering movement.
- Damaged or Missing Support Bush: Previous steering repairs or disassembly may have resulted in the bush being damaged or omitted.
- Visible Rubber Deterioration: Material separation, cracking or general ageing may be apparent during inspection.
Why Replacement Matters:
Replacing a worn, cracked or deteriorated steering column bearing support bush is important for maintaining correct bearing support, steering stability and the original operating characteristics of the vehicle's steering system.
Key Benefits of Replacement:
- Restores Bearing Support: Helps maintain the correct position of the associated steering shaft bearing.
- Reduces Unwanted Movement: Replaces deteriorated mounting material that may allow excessive movement within the steering assembly.
- Improves Steering System Stability: Supports the intended mounting arrangement of the steering column bearing.
- Reduces Rattling and Vibration: Helps minimise noises and vibration caused by a worn rubber support.
- Maintains Smooth Steering Operation: Provides the correct support required for consistent steering shaft movement.
- Protects Associated Steering Components: Helps reduce unnecessary movement and mechanical stress around the bearing mounting.
- Restores Original Equipment Fitment: Designed to match the factory steering bearing support arrangement.
- Supports Long-Term Steering Reliability: Helps maintain the mechanical integrity of the steering column assembly.
- Ideal for Steering System Refurbishment: Suitable when overhauling the steering rack, shaft bearings or associated mounting components.
- Replaces Ageing Rubber Components: Restores a deteriorated factory support bush with a new original-style replacement.
- Cost-Effective Preventative Maintenance: Replacing worn mounting components can help avoid further wear or movement within the steering assembly.
- Suitable for Classic Porsche Restoration: Helps preserve the original steering configuration and driving characteristics of classic Porsche 911 models.
Although the steering column bearing support bush is a relatively small component, it performs an important function in maintaining the correct support and positioning of the steering shaft bearing.
A deteriorated bush can allow unwanted movement, potentially contributing to steering vibration, rattling and additional stress on associated components.
Replacing the defective support bush with an OE MATCH component helps restore the intended bearing mounting arrangement and maintain consistent steering system operation.
Because steering is a safety-critical system, any excessive play, abnormal movement or binding should be investigated and corrected before the vehicle is driven.
