The speedometer cable forms the vital mechanical connection between the transmission and the speedometer gauge, transmitting rotational movement to accurately display vehicle speed and record mileage. Over time, original cables can become worn, stretched or seized, resulting in inaccurate readings, fluctuating needles or complete speedometer failure.
Manufactured to OE specifications, this OE Match replacement restores reliable operation while maintaining the authentic mechanical speedometer system found on early air-cooled Porsche 911 models.
What Does the Speedometer Cable Do?
The speedometer cable transfers rotational movement from the transmission drive to the speedometer head, allowing the instrument to accurately display vehicle speed and operate the odometer.
Its functions include:
- Transmitting drive from the gearbox to the speedometer.
- Providing accurate vehicle speed readings.
- Operating the odometer and trip counter.
- Ensuring smooth speedometer needle movement.
- Supporting reliable instrument operation.
- Maintaining original factory mechanical speedometer functionality.
A correctly functioning speedometer cable is essential for safe driving and accurate vehicle mileage recording.
Why Replace the Speedometer Cable?
After decades of continuous use, the internal cable and outer casing can suffer from wear, corrosion and lack of lubrication.
Replacement is recommended if the cable shows
signs of:
- Fraying or broken inner cable.
- Stiff or seized operation.
- Excessive wear. Kinked outer casing.
- Corrosion. Damaged end fittings.
- Noisy operation.
- Inaccurate speedometer readings.
Replacing a worn cable restores dependable speedometer performance while helping to protect the speedometer head from unnecessary wear.
Symptoms of a Worn or Failing Speedometer Cable
Common symptoms include:
- Speedometer needle bouncing or fluctuating.
- Complete loss of speedometer function.
- Squealing or clicking noises behind the dashboard.
- Inaccurate speed readings.
- Odometer not recording mileage correctly.
- Intermittent speedometer operation.
- Excessive vibration in the speedometer needle.
Replacing the cable at the first signs of wear helps prevent damage to the speedometer mechanism and ensures continued accuracy.

Installation Recommendations
Professional installation is recommended, particularly during gearbox or instrument refurbishment.
While replacing the speedometer cable, it is
advisable to inspect:
- Speedometer drive gear.
- Transmission drive fitting.
- Speedometer head.
- Dashboard instrument seals.
- Cable routing clips.
- Rubber grommets.
- Instrument illumination and wiring.
Ensure the cable is routed correctly with smooth bends and free from sharp kinks to maximise service life and maintain accurate operation.

The odometer pod is a critical component within the speedometer assembly, transferring drive through the internal gear train to operate both the odometer and trip meter. As these cars age, the original pod can become one of the most common causes of odometer failure.
The original Porsche pod was manufactured as two separate components—a disc bonded to a urethane gear. Over time, the bond between these two parts weakens due to age, heat and continual use, allowing the gear to separate from the disc and causing the odometer and trip meter to stop working, even though the speedometer needle may continue to display vehicle speed correctly.
Our OE Match replacement pod has been redesigned as a single-piece component, eliminating the original weak point entirely. By manufacturing the disc and gear as one solid unit, the possibility of separation is removed, resulting in a significantly stronger, more durable component for a permanent repair.
The small pod has an outside diameter of 15.44 mm and is manufactured to provide precise fitment and reliable operation within the original VDO speedometer.
For the best long-term repair, we strongly recommend replacing both the pod and the mating gear at the same time. Worn gears can accelerate wear of a new pod, so renewing both components ensures smooth operation and maximum service life.
Important Ordering Information
Before ordering, the speedometer must be dismantled to identify the correct pod style and tooth count.
Measure your existing pod to confirm it is the small 15.44 mm diameter version. Count the teeth on your original pod before ordering. Porsche used several pod and gear combinations during production. For a permanent repair, replace both the pod and the matching gear together.Key Features
- One-piece construction for maximum strength
- Eliminates the original two-piece bonded design failure
- Small
pod with 15.44 mm outside diameter
- Restores odometer and trip meter operation
- Precision manufactured for accurate fit
- Ideal for speedometer restoration and instrument repairs
- Recommended to replace the matching gear at the same time
Porsche 964 & 993 Odometer and Speedometer Repair Parts
The VDO instruments fitted to the Porsche 964 and 993 are renowned for their quality, but after many years of service the original odometer pods frequently fail. The bonded construction of the factory component eventually allows the urethane gear to separate from its carrier, leaving the odometer unable to record mileage.
This upgraded OE Match one-piece pod removes this inherent weakness while maintaining the original functionality of the speedometer mechanism. It is an ideal solution for enthusiasts, restoration specialists and independent Porsche workshops looking for a reliable, long-lasting repair.
Common Symptoms of a Failed Odometer Pod
- Speedometer needle works normally
- Odometer has stopped recording mileage
- Trip meter no longer advances
- Intermittent odometer operation
- Gear separates from the pod
- Internal gear train slips or fails to rotate
Because several pod sizes and tooth count combinations were used during production, always dismantle the speedometer and verify the existing component before ordering.
