Also commonly known as a shock absorber dust boot, strut boot or protective gaiter, the bellow helps shield the damper piston rod and sealing area from abrasive road debris. Keeping these surfaces clean is important because contamination can damage the piston rod surface or compromise the shock absorber seal over time.
The bellow repeatedly expands and contracts as the suspension moves. Combined with exposure to road dirt, water, temperature changes and age, this can eventually cause the material to harden, crack or split.
