Designed to address common internal PDK sensor failures that can cause transmission warning messages, fault codes, limp mode and loss of normal transmission operation.
What Does the PDK Distance & Speed Sensor Do?
The Porsche PDK transmission relies on internal sensors to monitor the position and movement of its shift mechanisms.
These signals allow the PDK control system to determine which gears are selected and accurately control gear engagement. If the sensor produces an incorrect, intermittent or implausible signal, the transmission control unit may no longer be able to reliably determine the position of the relevant shift rod.
This can trigger fault codes, dashboard warnings or transmission failsafe/limp mode.
Common Symptoms of PDK Sensor Failure
A failing distance or speed sensor may cause:
- PDK transmission warning messages
- Transmission entering limp or failsafe mode
- Loss of normal gear selection
- Difficulty selecting particular gears Loss of reverse gear
- Intermittent transmission operation
- Vehicle becoming undrivable
- “Transm. fault Poss. no R gear…” or similar dashboard warnings
- Stored PDK transmission fault codes
These symptoms can have other causes, so correct diagnostic testing should always be carried out before replacing the sensor.
Why Replace the Sensor Instead of the Complete PDK Transmission?
An internal sensor fault does not necessarily mean that the complete PDK gearbox has mechanically failed.
Where professional diagnosis confirms that the distance/speed sensor is responsible for the fault, replacing the defective internal sensor can provide a significantly more economical repair than replacing the complete transmission.
This makes the sensor particularly valuable for Porsche specialists and transmission repairers carrying out component-level PDK repairs.
New Integrated Sensor Assembly
The sensor is supplied as a brand-new component and is not used, salvaged or remanufactured.
Its integrated construction incorporates the sensor harness and OEM-style plug, eliminating the need to splice or modify the wiring during installation.
The housing is precision CNC-machined from aluminium alloy to provide excellent thermal stability and resistance to the high temperatures, vibration and demanding operating conditions found inside the PDK transmission.
Technical Design Features
The sensor incorporates several features designed to provide
accurate and stable operation:
- Integrated sensor and wiring harness assembly
- No wiring modification or splicing required
- Dual-axis induction design
- Designed for strong resistance to electrical interference
- Automotive-grade integrated electronics
- Centralised chip layout for stable signal transmission
- 0.2mm ultra-thin PEEK sensing window
- Designed to minimise eddy-current effects
- CNC-machined aluminium alloy housing
- Improved resistance to heat and vibration
- Designed to address heat-related deterioration associated with original sensors
Common Porsche PDK Fault Codes
A failed distance sensor can be associated with a number of
Porsche PDK diagnostic trouble codes, including:
- P1731 – Displacement Sensor Shift Rod Gears 4/6: Implausible Signal
- P1732 – Displacement Sensor Shift Rod Gears 5/7: Implausible Signal
- P1733 – Displacement Sensor Shift Rod Gears 1/3: Implausible Signal
- P1734 – Displacement Sensor Shift Rod Gears 2/R: Implausible / Incorrect Signal
- P1735 – Distance Sensor Shift Rod Gears 4/6: Short-Term Fault
- P1736 – Distance Sensor Shift Rod Gears 5/7: Short-Term Fault
- P1737 – Distance Sensor Shift Rod Gears 1/3: Short-Term Fault
- P1738 – Distance Sensor Shift Rod Gears 2/R: Short-Term Fault
The presence of one of these codes does not automatically confirm sensor failure. The transmission should be professionally diagnosed before parts are replaced.
Compatible PDK Transmissions
- 7DT45 7-speed PDK
- 7DT70 7-speed PDK
Not compatible with Porsche 911 992 models, as the 992 generation does not use the 7DT45 or 7DT70 PDK transmission.
Transmission type should always be confirmed before ordering, as model designation alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Professional Installation Required
Replacement of internal PDK sensors is a specialist procedure and should not be considered a simple DIY repair.
Installation should be carried out by an experienced Porsche or PDK transmission specialist with the appropriate diagnostic equipment.
Correct diagnosis, installation, calibration and programming are essential to ensure the transmission operates correctly after replacement.
PDK Distance & Speed Sensor Replacement
PDK transmission problems can sometimes result in owners being advised that a complete gearbox replacement is required. However, when diagnostic testing identifies an internal distance or speed sensor as the source of the problem, component-level repair may provide a considerably more cost-effective solution.
Replacing the faulty sensor allows a qualified transmission specialist to repair the affected part of the PDK system without automatically replacing an otherwise serviceable transmission.
For Porsche 997, 991, 987, 981 and 718 models equipped with compatible 7DT45 or 7DT70 transmissions, this replacement sensor provides a purpose-designed solution for repairing confirmed internal PDK sensor faults.

911 PDK Distance & Speed Sensor
The Porsche PDK Distance and Speed Sensor is a critical
component in the dual-clutch transmission system of the 911. It continuously
supplies the transmission control unit (TCU) with real-time position data of
the gear shift rods and wheel/turbine speed. This data ensures precise gear
engagement, fast shifts and smooth driving performance in everyday and
high-load conditions.

Without accurate distance and speed sensor input, the PDK
system can behave unpredictably, losing its ability to shift gears correctly.
When the TCU cannot detect gear positions or speed signals, it may lock the
gearbox into one gear or enter a safe “limp mode,” severely limiting vehicle
performance and drivability.
Please Note
The PDKDS/1 and PDKDS/2 sensors are designed for different
Porsche PDK transmission layouts. The 911 transmission is effectively a mirror
image of the Boxster/Cayman gearbox, meaning the sensor is mounted in the
opposite orientation.
While the Nordlicht sensor can be flipped and used in both applications, the advanced sensing technology used in the OE Match sensor requires the internal sensing elements to remain correctly positioned relative to the gearbox internals. For this reason, the PDKDS and PDKDS/1 sensors use different internal orientations and are not interchangeable.
By developing a dedicated sensor for each transmission type, the output can be calibrated far more accurately to match OEM specifications. This results in improved performance, easier calibration, and greater reliability compared to universal aftermarket sensors.
Why Distance and Speed Sensors Fail
PDK gearbox sensors are exposed to extreme heat, torque
spikes and constant vibration over time. Common reasons these sensors fail
include:
- Wear from prolonged exposure to high transmission temperatures
- Electrical issues like broken connections, short circuits or degraded wiring
- Normal mechanical degradation from age and mileage
- Contaminated transmission fluid affecting sensor integrity
When these sensors start to fail, the transmission control unit receives incorrect or no data, which triggers fault codes and incorrect gear shift behavior.
Common Fault Signs and Error Codes
Drivers and technicians often identify distance and speed
sensor failures by diagnostic trouble codes or visible symptoms, such as:
- PDK gearbox fault warning on dashboard
- Gearbox stuck in a single gear or neutral Jerky or delayed gear changes
- Error codes like P1731 to P1734 for distance sensor issues
- Fault codes such as P0730, P1743, P1744 related to speed sensor faults
These indications show that the sensor no longer reports accurate position and speed information to the transmission control unit.
Why You May Need a Replacement Sensor
If your Porsche 911 shows gearbox faults or fails to shift smoothly, a renewed PDK distance and speed sensor can restore proper transmission operation without resorting to costly gearbox replacement. Unlike full transmission swaps, which can run into tens of thousands of pounds, replacing the internal high-quality sensor pack offers a targeted fix that restores driveability and performance.
For performance enthusiasts, frequent track use or high-mileage 911s, replacing failing sensors early can prevent further internal wear, avoid limp mode events and protect expensive transmission hardware.
Quality Replacement Parts for Porsche PDK Transmissions
At Design911, we source high-integrity PDK distance and speed sensors designed to meet or exceed OEM specifications for Porsche 911 models equipped with ZF 7DT45 or 7DT70 transmissions. These units are engineered for durability in high-heat, high-load environments and are supplied as complete assemblies with harness and connectors where applicable.
Upgrading or replacing the PDK distance and speed sensor is
essential for:
- Porsche 911 owners experiencing gearbox fault codes
- Drivers who want reliable shifting and transmission response
- Vehicles with high mileage or extreme usage conditions
- Preventative maintenance before major transmission failures
