What This Product Does:
- In the early 911/912 vehicles, the engine lubrication system often included an oil tank/reservoir separate from the main sump; this tank would hold oil, supply oil to the engine under varied conditions (including the lateral loads in a sports car) and help maintain oil pressure, volume and cooling.
- The tank may also function as part of the dry-sump or semi-dry-sump system: collecting oil from scavenge lines and returning it to be pumped again, or acting as a surge tank to prevent oil starvation under cornering or load.
- Proper oil supply and correct oil tank sizing/installation is critical for engine longevity, especially in sports driving situations where oil slosh, foaming or starvation can cause damage.
Signs You Might Need Replacement:
- Visible damage or corrosion: The tank may show rust, corrosion (especially if made steel) - which could cause leaks or contamination.
- Oil leaks around tank fittings, seams or connections to oil lines.
- Foaming oil, oil starvation or low oil pressure during vigorous driving: if the oil tank isn’t functioning properly (e.g., internal baffles missing, capacity reduced, internal return lines blocked) you may get oil starvation or pressure drop.
- Restoration/project status: On a classic 911/912 from ’65-71, replacing the oil tank with a fresh correct-spec unit is considered good practice during engine rebuild or full restoration to ensure reliability.
