Timing chain tensioner blade
Original Porsche Genuine OE timing chain tensioner guide used in the timing system. It provides the guided surface against which the timing chain runs under tension, working together with the timing chain tensioner to ensure correct chain tension and positioning.
Sold each, 2 required per vehicle
Fits:
Porsche 986 Boxster 2.5L / 2.7L / 3.2L 1997 - 2002
Porsche 996 3.4L 1998 - 2002
Diagram ref no 30.
This timing chain tensioner guide is a factory-original Porsche component, engineered to the exact material, dimensions, and performance standards specified by Porsche. Installed within the engine’s timing case, it serves as a precision wear surface for the timing chain under the applying force of the hydraulic tensioner.
The timing chain tensioner guide works with the hydraulic tensioner to maintain consistent tension on the timing chain as it cycles over the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. It provides a controlled sliding surface that helps prevent slack, reduces chain vibration and noise, and supports accurate cam/crank synchronization throughout the engine’s operating range.
Function: Mounted in the timing chain housing, this OEM guide interfaces directly with the tensioner assembly and the timing chain itself. As the hydraulic tensioner applies pressure, the guide helps distribute that force evenly across the chain’s path, ensuring that the chain remains correctly tensioned and aligned. This contributes to smooth, quiet timing system operation, consistent valve timing, and reduced risk of premature wear on timing chains and sprockets.
Timing chain tensioner guides are critical wear items in Porsche M96 engines. Over time, the guide surface can wear, deform, or develop grooves due to prolonged chain contact and heat cycling. A compromised guide can lead to slack, chain vibration, noise (“chain rattle”), and irregular chain travel - conditions that increase stress on the chain and sprockets, and can lead to premature system wear or failure. Replacing worn tensioner guides with Genuine Porsche OE parts restores the exact engineered surface and interaction with the timing chain and tensioner. This helps maintain quiet, accurate timing operation and protects the engine’s costly timing components.
When to replace:
• Noise from the timing chain area (rattle or chatter)
• During timing chain system inspection or overhaul
Visible wear or plastic debris from the guide surfaces
• High-mileage preventive maintenance
• Whenever the timing system is serviced or the tensioner is replaced

Timing chain guide.
Genuine Porsche Original Equipment (OE) timing chain guide used in the timing system. It provides a precisely engineered surface against which the timing chain runs, helping maintain correct chain alignment and reduce chain noise and wear.
Sold each, 2 required per engine.
Fits:
Porsche 986 Boxster 2.5L / 2.7L / 3.2L 1997 - 2002
Porsche 996 3.4L 1998 - 2001
Diagram ref no 33.
The timing chain guide provides a wear-resistant contact surface that supports the timing chain’s path as it moves over the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. It helps maintain correct chain alignment, reduces vibration and chatter, and minimises wear on the chain and related components - especially under repeated load cycles and high-RPM conditions.
Installed inside the timing case, this OE guide sits in the chain’s routing path and provides a controlled sliding surface that interacts with the chain links. It works in conjunction with the timing chain tensioner (e.g., 99610517552) to ensure correct chain tension, reduce chain slack, and preserve accurate valve timing as designed by Porsche.
The timing chain guide is a critical wear item in Porsche M96 engines. Over time, the original guide surfaces can wear, crack, or deform due to friction and engine heat. A compromised guide can lead to timing chain noise (often described as “chain rattle”), reduced tension control, or uneven wear of the chain and sprockets.
Replacing worn or failed guides with a Genuine Porsche OE part restores the exact engineered surface, ensures accurate chain control, reduces noise, and helps protect high-cost timing system components - preserving the precision and performance that Porsche designed into the engine.
When to replace:
• Engine exhibits timing chain noise, especially at start-up or idle
• Timing chain slack or vibration is observed
• During major engine service or rebuild
• When original guide shows cracking, abrasion, or wear scoring
• Preventive replacement on high-mile engines
