Information
Camshaft adjuster seal.
This is a sealing ring for the timing chain tensioner used in Porsche M96/M97 engines (996, early Boxster, Cayman, etc.). Its purpose is to seal the hydraulic timing chain tensioner, which relies on engine oil pressure to keep the timing chain tight and correctly tensioned.
Fits:
Porsche 986 Boxster / S >>2001
Porsche 996 C2 / C4 >>2001
Diagram ref no 20
• Position on Vehicle: Installed within the engine timing cover/tensioner housing area - interacts directly with the chain tensioner mechanism to hold hydraulic pressure and oil flow correctly.
• Applications: Especially recommended when performing timing chain service, chain guide/tensioner replacement or when the original seal shows oil seepage or has been re-used in high-load service conditions.
In the intricate timing chain system of the M96/M97 engines, the tensioner seal is critical for maintaining correct hydraulic pressure and preventing oil leakage. A worn or failed seal can allow pressure loss, cause chain slack, timing drift or increased engine stress - even leading to damage if timing is compromised. Replacing this seal ensures the tensioner works as designed, helps maintain timing chain alignment and preserves the overall health of your engine.
When and why to replace:
• You are already servicing the timing chain, tensioner, or guides.
• Noticing oil leaks or seepage around the timing cover or tensioner area.
• Engine exhibits timing-chain noise, erratic timing or hydraulic pressure issues.
• High-mileage engine where original seals have aged or may be brittle.
• Preventative maintenance during major service to avoid future timing-chain failures.
