The OE MATCH Battery Voltage Gauge is a VDO-style electrical gauge designed to provide a clear indication of the vehicle’s battery and charging-system voltage. With an 8–16 volt display range, it allows the driver to monitor electrical system performance from the cockpit and identify abnormal voltage conditions before they develop into starting or reliability problems.
Fits:
- Porsche 914 (1970-1976)
What This Product Does:
The battery voltage gauge acts as a real-time monitor for the vehicle’s electrical system. With the ignition and engine running, it allows the driver to see whether the alternator and charging system are maintaining an appropriate voltage.
When the engine is switched off, the gauge can also provide an indication of battery voltage when the relevant electrical circuit is energised.
Monitoring voltage can help alert the driver to problems involving components such as the:
- Battery
- Alternator
- Voltage regulator
- Charging circuit
- Electrical connections and wiring
Rather than waiting for a weak battery or charging failure to leave the vehicle unable to start, a functioning voltmeter can provide an early visual indication that something in the electrical system requires investigation.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Ageing gauges and their internal electrical components can eventually become inaccurate or stop operating altogether. Typical symptoms include:
- Gauge needle not moving
- Needle permanently reading too high or too low
- Voltage reading that appears obviously inaccurate
- Intermittent or fluctuating readings unrelated to actual system voltage
- Needle sticking or responding slowly
- Gauge working only occasionally
- Internal or electrical failure
- Physical damage to the gauge face, needle or housing
- Faded or difficult-to-read markings
- Poor illumination, where applicable
Before replacing the gauge, wiring, earth connections and actual battery voltage should also be checked, as an unusual reading can indicate a genuine charging-system problem rather than a faulty instrument.
Why Replacement Matters:
- A failed or inaccurate voltage gauge removes a useful source of information about the condition of the vehicle’s electrical system.
- If the alternator stops charging correctly, battery voltage can gradually fall until there is insufficient electrical power to operate the vehicle reliably or restart the engine. Conversely, excessive charging voltage may indicate a regulator or charging-system fault that should be investigated.
- Replacing a defective gauge restores the driver's ability to monitor voltage at a glance, providing useful advance warning of potential battery or charging issues.
- For classic vehicles, reliable electrical monitoring can be particularly valuable because ageing wiring, connectors, grounds, alternators and voltage regulators may all contribute to charging-system problems.

Internal Odometer Speedometer Gear - Multiple Tooth Count Options
Restore the operation of your classic Porsche speedometer with this OE Match Internal Odometer Speedometer Gear. Manufactured to replace the original internal plastic drive gear, this component restores the mechanical drive to the odometer and trip meter when the original gear has become worn, brittle or broken.
The internal odometer gear is housed within the speedometer and transfers drive from the speedometer mechanism to the odometer assembly. Over time, the original plastic gear naturally deteriorates through age and repeated use, often causing the odometer and trip meter to stop recording mileage while the speedometer needle continues to function normally.
Replacing the failed gear is a cost-effective repair that allows you to retain the original speedometer while restoring accurate mileage recording.
Choosing the Correct Gear
There are multiple tooth count options fitted to speedometers. Before ordering, the speedometer must be opened so the original gear can be inspected and the correct tooth count confirmed.
The replacement gear consists of:
- Outer
gear: Always 20 teeth
- Inner gear: Available with 21 to 32 teeth, depending on your speedometer.
If the original gear is too damaged to count accurately, count the teeth on the mating gear instead. Use the following guide to determine the correct replacement:
Teeth on Mating Gear - Required Gear
49 teeth 20 x 21
48 teeth 20 x 22
47 teeth 20 x 23
41 teeth 20 x 29
40 teeth 20 x 30
38 teeth 20 x 32
Please Note:
The speedometer must be dismantled to confirm both the correct gear
style and tooth count before ordering. Ordering without verifying the existing
gear may result in purchasing the incorrect replacement.
Key Features
- Restores odometer and trip meter operation
- Direct replacement for worn or broken internal plastic gears
- Multiple inner tooth count options available
- Outer gear always features 20 teeth
- Cost-effective alternative to replacing the complete speedometer
- Ideal for instrument restoration and repair
The original instruments fitted to early Porsche models are built to last, but one of the few components that commonly fails is the small internal plastic odometer drive gear. Heat, age and decades of continuous operation eventually make the original material brittle, causing the gear teeth to crack or strip.
Fortunately, replacing the damaged gear restores normal operation while allowing you to retain your original factory instrument.
Common Symptoms of a Failed Odometer Gear
- Speedometer needle operates normally
- Odometer has stopped recording mileage
- Trip meter no longer advances
- Intermittent odometer operation
- Broken or cracked plastic gear inside the speedometer
Because Porsche used several different gear ratios throughout production, identifying the correct gear before ordering is essential for a successful repair.

This gear is located on the side of the speedometer framework and forms an important part of the internal gear train that drives both the odometer and trip meter. Over time, the original plastic gear can become brittle through age and repeated use, often developing a fine crack around the centre bore where it fits onto the shaft. Once cracked, the gear can no longer grip the shaft correctly, causing it to slip and preventing the odometer from recording mileage accurately.
One of the most common symptoms is that the speedometer needle continues to work normally, while the odometer and trip meter stop counting or operate intermittently.
It is important to note that there are potentially two internal gears that commonly fail within the speedometer. Before ordering, inspect the gear mounted on the side of the speedometer framework.
If your existing gear is metal, this replacement is not required. If your gear is plastic, inspect it carefully around the shaft hole for hairline cracks or signs of slipping. Even a very small crack is enough to cause the gear to fail.To ensure the correct replacement is ordered, the speedometer must be opened and the existing gear inspected. As Porsche used several different gear styles and tooth counts across production, it is always recommended to confirm the original gear before purchasing.
Key Features
- Replaces the plastic gear fitted to the side of the speedometer framework
- Restores odometer and trip meter operation
- Direct replacement for worn or cracked original gears
- Manufactured for precise fit and reliable performance
- Ideal for speedometer restoration and instrument repairs
Always inspect your original gear before ordering Not required if your existing gear is metal
Porsche Mechanical Speedometer & Odometer Repair Parts
The mechanical VDO speedometers fitted to classic Porsche models are renowned for their durability, but after decades of service the internal plastic gears naturally become brittle. One of the most common failures occurs when the gear mounted on the side of the speedometer framework develops a small crack around the centre shaft.
Although the crack is often difficult to see, it prevents the gear from gripping the shaft securely, allowing it to rotate independently instead of driving the odometer mechanism. Replacing the damaged gear restores accurate mileage recording while preserving the originality of your factory instrument.
Common Symptoms of a Failed Mechanical Odometer Gear
- Speedometer needle operates correctly
- Odometer has stopped recording mileage
- Trip meter no longer works
- Intermittent odometer operation
- Gear slips on the shaft
- Hairline crack visible around the centre bore of the plastic gear
Because several different gear designs and tooth counts were used across Porsche production, dismantling the speedometer and inspecting the original gear is essential before ordering a replacement.
