What This Product Does:
- The top mount (upper mount) of the shock/strut assembly is critical: it secures the top of the damper to the vehicle’s body/strut tower, supports the spring/damper load, and ensures correct alignment and isolation of vibration or noise.
- Over time, mounts/washers/nuts can corrode, loosen, rubber can deteriorate (if included), or tolerances may degrade, leading to movement, noise, vibration or alignment issues. Replacing the full kit restores the interface — ensuring the shock absorber is properly anchored, loads are contained, and suspension geometry/behaviour maintained.
When You Should Consider Replacement:
- Clunking, knocking or popping noises from the rear strut top area when driving over bumps, or when the suspension unloads/loads.
- Excessive vibration or “thunk” from the rear when cornering or braking — indicating the top mount might be giving way.
- Poor rear suspension feel / looseness in the rear – drifting feel, less precise handling than before.
- Visual signs of wear – if you inspect the top mount area and find nut is loose, washers/show signs of corrosion, the cap or mount plate is damaged, or the mount has had previous repair.
- During a shock absorber/strut replacement or rear suspension refresh – if you have the unit removed, it is highly efficient to replace the top mount kit at the same time, rather than later.
- Preserves handling & ride quality: A solid top mount ensures the damper is correctly loaded and held; any looseness or deterioration will degrade ride feel, stability, tyre contact patch and overall rear suspension behaviour.
- Reduces noise, vibration & harshness (NVH): A failing top mount often transmits odd noises into the cabin — in a performance car like a Porsche, that detracts significantly.
- Prevents further damage: If the mount fails, loads may transfer into the shock, spring seat or body structure incorrectly, leading to bigger and more expensive repairs.
