Oil Tank
Restore the dry-sump lubrication system of your classic
Porsche with this OE Match Engine Oil Tank for the Porsche 914-6 2.0ltr
Fits:
Porsche 914-6 2.0 11/69-12/73
The oil tank is a fundamental part of the 914-6 dry-sump lubrication system, storing the engine's oil externally rather than relying on a conventional sump beneath the engine. Correct oil storage and circulation are particularly important on the air-cooled flat-six, helping maintain a reliable supply of lubricant during normal road use and more demanding driving.
What Does the Oil Tank Do?
Unlike a conventional wet-sump engine, the Porsche 914-6 uses a dry-sump lubrication system. Oil is stored in a separate reservoir and circulated through the engine as required.
The oil tank performs several important functions:
- Stores the engine's oil supply outside the crankcase
- Provides a reliable supply of oil to the lubrication system
- Helps separate air from returning engine oil
- Helps prevent oil aeration and foaming
- Supports consistent lubrication during acceleration, braking and cornering
- Assists with managing oil temperature
- Provides the reservoir from which oil is recirculated through the engine
Maintaining the integrity of the oil tank is therefore essential to the health and longevity of the engine.
Why Do Oil Tanks Fail?
Original Porsche 914-6 oil tanks are now more than 50 years old, and corrosion is one of the biggest concerns.
Moisture can accumulate inside an ageing tank, causing internal corrosion that may not be immediately visible from the outside. External corrosion can also develop around seams, mounting areas and locations where dirt and moisture become trapped.
Common causes of deterioration include:
- Internal corrosion caused by moisture
- External rust and deterioration
- Age-related deterioration around seams and joints
- Damage from impact or incorrect removal
- Previous welding or poor-quality repairs
- Contamination, sludge and debris inside the tank
- Deterioration around hose connections and fittings
Older reservoirs can eventually become difficult or uneconomical to repair, making replacement the more dependable option during restoration.
When Should the Oil Tank Be Replaced?
Replacement should be considered whenever the existing tank can no longer provide a clean, secure and leak-free oil reservoir.
Typical signs include:
- Visible oil leaks from the tank
- Heavy external corrosion
- Suspected internal rust
- Corrosion around seams or mounting points
- Damaged or deteriorated connections
- Contamination or debris that cannot be reliably removed
- Previous repairs or patches of questionable condition
- Physical damage to the tank
- During a comprehensive engine or vehicle restoration
A heavily corroded tank should not be ignored. Rust and contamination entering the lubrication circuit can potentially circulate through the engine, while a leaking tank can reduce the available oil supply.
Why Replace an Ageing 914-6 Oil Tank?
For an original or restored Porsche 914-6, replacing a questionable oil tank is preventative maintenance for one of the engine's most important systems.
A sound replacement tank helps restore the integrity of the dry-sump lubrication system and provides peace of mind that clean engine oil is being stored in a secure reservoir rather than an ageing, internally corroded original tank.
It is particularly worth considering during an engine
rebuild or full restoration, when the oil lines, filler system, filter console
and associated components can be inspected at the same time.
Oil Tanks & Dry-Sump Lubrication
Components
The Porsche 914-6 dry-sump lubrication system depends on a sound oil tank, hoses, fittings, filler components and filter connections to maintain reliable oil circulation.
After more than five decades, corrosion, contamination and previous repairs can make original oil reservoirs increasingly difficult to restore with confidence. Replacing a deteriorated tank with an OE Match 90110700546 oil reservoir is an effective way to restore this critical part of the lubrication system during a Porsche 914-6 restoration or engine rebuild.
For the best results, associated oil hoses, seals, filler neck components, mounting hardware and oil filter connections should also be inspected when replacing the tank.
