Also known as an upstream, pre-cat or O2 sensor, the lambda sensor provides essential feedback to the engine control unit (ECU). By measuring residual oxygen in the exhaust stream, it enables the ECU to determine whether the engine is operating with a rich or lean air-fuel mixture and make continuous corrections to fuel delivery.
As a pre-catalytic converter sensor, it has an important role in closed-loop fuel control. Accurate readings help maintain efficient combustion, responsive performance, appropriate fuel consumption and controlled exhaust emissions.
Lambda sensors operate under demanding conditions and are continually exposed to extreme exhaust temperatures, vibration and combustion deposits. With age, the sensing element can become contaminated or slow to respond, while the internal heater, wiring or electrical connections may also deteriorate.
