Also known as an oxygen sensor, O2 sensor or lambda probe, this component measures the oxygen content present in the exhaust gases. Because this particular sensor is located downstream of the catalytic converter, one of its primary roles is to provide the engine control unit (ECU) with information used to monitor catalytic converter operation and overall exhaust-system performance.
The ECU compares information from sensors positioned before and after the catalytic converter. Changes in these signals allow the engine-management system to assess whether the catalyst is storing and converting exhaust pollutants as expected.
Lambda sensors operate in an exceptionally demanding environment, exposed to very high exhaust temperatures, vibration, moisture and combustion deposits. Over time, the sensing element can become contaminated or electrically degraded, while wiring and connectors may suffer heat-related damage.
