The timing chain operates continuously whenever the engine is running. Although manufactured for long service life, gradual wear can develop in the chain links, pins and contact surfaces, as well as in associated guides, tensioners and sprockets.
Excessive wear or chain elongation can create additional slack, abnormal mechanical noise and inaccurate timing. If deterioration progresses far enough for the chain to jump, derail or fail, significant internal engine damage may result.
What This Product Does:
The left upper timing chain forms part of the engine's mechanical timing drive.
Its role is to transfer rotational movement between associated timing components while maintaining their required mechanical relationship.
This helps support:
- Accurate operation of the engine timing system
- Correct synchronisation of associated components
- Reliable transfer of rotational drive
- Accurate camshaft drive where applicable
- Correct valve timingSmooth engine operation
- Stable combustionConsistent engine performance
Correct chain tension and accurate engagement with the associated sprockets are essential for dependable engine timing.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Possible symptoms of timing-chain or associated timing-system deterioration include:
These symptoms can also be caused by other timing components, so the system should be correctly diagnosed before individual parts are replaced.
Why Replacement Matters:
The left upper timing chain is a critical part of the engine's mechanical timing system.
Replacing a confirmed worn, elongated or damaged IWIS Timing Chain, Left Upper can help:
- Restore dependable timing-chain operation
- Maintain accurate mechanical synchronisation
- Restore correct camshaft drive where applicable
- Reduce excessive chain slack
- Reduce abnormal timing-chain noise
- Protect associated guides and sprockets
- Reduce the risk of timing deviation
- Reduce the risk of chain derailment
- Reduce the risk of the chain jumping
- Support smooth engine operation
- Protect expensive internal engine components
Once excessive chain wear has been confirmed, continued operation can allow deterioration to progress and increase the possibility of a substantially more expensive engine repair.
