Timing Chain, Center Lower.
The IWIS Timing Chain, Center Lower is a replacement engine timing component for compatible Porsche applications. Located within the engine timing system, the chain transfers rotational drive between timing components and helps maintain the precise mechanical relationship required for correct engine operation.
Fits:
Diagram Ref No 28
Accurate engine timing is essential for correct combustion, smooth running and reliable engine operation. Because the timing chain operates continuously whenever the engine is running, wear, elongation or problems elsewhere in the timing system can eventually affect timing accuracy and potentially cause serious engine damage.

Accurate engine timing is essential for correct combustion, smooth running and reliable engine operation. Because the timing chain operates continuously whenever the engine is running, wear, elongation or problems elsewhere in the timing system can eventually affect timing accuracy and potentially cause serious engine damage.
What This Product Does:
The center lower timing chain transfers rotational drive within the engine's timing system.
Its role is to maintain the precise mechanical relationship required between the crankshaft and the timing components it drives.
A correctly operating timing chain system helps:
- Maintain accurate engine timing
- Synchronise rotating engine components
- Support correct valve timing through the timing drive
- Maintain smooth and consistent engine operation
- Support efficient combustion and engine performance
- Keep the timing system operating reliably throughout the engine speed range
The chain works together with components such as sprockets, guides and tensioners. These components should be considered as a complete system when diagnosing timing-related problems.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Timing chains are designed for long service life, but they can still deteriorate due to mileage, lubrication problems, tensioner or guide wear, contamination and general mechanical wear.
Possible symptoms include:
- Rattling from the timing-chain area
- Rattle during engine start-up
- Metallic rattling or clattering while running
- Timing-related diagnostic fault codes
- Check Engine Light
- Rough idle
- Poor engine performance
- Hesitation or uneven acceleration
- Difficult starting
- Engine misfires
- Unstable engine operation
- Timing values outside the expected range
- Metal debris found in the engine oil or filter
- Excessive chain slack or elongation confirmed during inspection
Timing-related symptoms should be investigated promptly.
Why Replacement Matters:
The timing chain is a critical internal engine component. Excessive wear or failure can affect the mechanical timing of the engine.
Replacing a confirmed worn or damaged timing chain helps:
- Restore correct timing-system operation
- Maintain accurate mechanical timing
- Reduce excessive chain movement
- Address timing-chain rattling caused by confirmed chain wear
- Restore reliable engine operation
- Reduce stress on associated timing components
- Prevent further deterioration of the timing drive
- Reduce the risk of major engine damage
Timing-system faults should not be ignored because failure can progress from noise or timing errors to severe mechanical problems.

What This Product Does:
- The timing chain synchronises the crankshaft with other components — here especially linking to the oil pump / cam drive path — so that the engine’s valves operate at the correct times relative to piston movement.
- Over time, chains can stretch, guides may wear, tensioners may degrade — all of which will allow slack in the drive, noise, timing drift or even failure.
- Essentially, this chain is a critical link in the engine’s timing system — it must stay within spec to ensure the engine runs as designed.
When You Should Consider Replacement:
- Rattling or clattering noise from the engine’s timing‐cover area, especially on cold start, idle or at low revs. Slack chain often causes this.
- Timing-related fault codes — cam/ crank correlation errors, or variable valve timing issues that could stem from chain/tensioning irregularity.
- Loss of engine performance, rough running, mis-fires, or inconsistent response — because timing drift can affect the engine’s breathing and ignition.
- High mileage or long service interval without chain replacement — wear accumulates even if symptoms are subtle.
- Visual inspection (where possible) may show wear or elongation in chain links, damaged guides or tensioner issues.
Why Replacement Matters:
- Engine protection: A failed or excessively worn timing chain can cause piston-valve contact, or major internal engine damage. Replacing the chain significantly reduces that risk.
- Maintains timing accuracy: A new chain ensures correct timing events — vital for power delivery, engine smoothness, efficiency and longevity.
- Noise & NVH improvement: Slack or worn chain components often produce unwanted noise and degrade refinement — renewed parts improve comfort.
- Cost-efficiency: Since accessing the chain involves significant labour (front engine cover, oil pump, possibly other removal), replacing the chain while you’re already in saves repeated work.
