The ignition switch is one of the most frequently used components inside a classic Porsche 911. Over time, the surrounding trim can become scratched, cracked, loose or damaged through regular use, age-related deterioration and previous repairs.
This OE Match replacement kit provides a practical solution for refreshing the ignition lock surround while maintaining the original appearance of the early Porsche 911 interior.
Ideal for routine interior refurbishment or a complete classic Porsche restoration, the kit helps restore a neat, factory-style finish around the ignition switch assembly.
What Does the Ignition Lock Cover Kit Do?
The ignition lock cover provides a finishing trim around the ignition switch assembly, helping maintain the original appearance of the dashboard.
The cover helps conceal the surrounding mounting area and provides a neat transition between the ignition lock and adjacent dashboard trim.
Its main functions include:
- Providing an original-style finish around the ignition lock
- Concealing the surrounding ignition switch mounting area
- Helping protect the covered area from everyday contact
- Maintaining the appearance of the dashboard
- Replacing damaged or missing ignition lock trim
- Supporting accurate classic Porsche interior restoration
Although the cover does not operate the ignition switch itself, it is an important finishing component within the distinctive early Porsche 911 dashboard.
Why Does the Ignition Lock Cover Fail?
Original ignition lock covers can deteriorate after decades of use, particularly as the ignition key is inserted and removed repeatedly.
Common causes of damage include:
- Scratches caused by keys and key rings
- Age-related cracking or brittleness
- Wear from repeated contact around the ignition switch
- Damage during ignition lock removal or replacement
- Broken or damaged retaining points
- Deterioration of the original surface finish
- Incorrect fitting during previous dashboard repairs
- Missing trim following restoration work
Even minor damage can become noticeable because the ignition switch is positioned prominently on the dashboard.
When Should It Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended when the original ignition lock cover becomes worn, cracked, loose, damaged or missing.
Common signs include:
- Visible scratches or cracks around the ignition lock
- Damaged or deteriorated trim finish
- Loose or poorly fitting ignition surround
- Broken mounting or retaining points
- Missing ignition lock trim
- An untidy appearance around the ignition switch
- Incorrect or mismatched trim fitted during previous repairs
The ignition lock cover is also worth replacing during a dashboard refurbishment, ignition switch overhaul or complete Porsche 911 interior restoration.
Checks & Diagnosis
Before replacing the ignition lock cover, inspect the existing ignition switch assembly and surrounding dashboard trim.
Check for:
- Cracks or damage to the original cover
- Loose or missing retaining components
- Damage around the ignition lock mounting area
- Incorrectly fitted or mismatched trim
- Wear caused by keys rubbing against the surround
- Signs of previous ignition switch repairs
If the ignition key is difficult to insert, turn or remove, the problem may be related to the ignition lock mechanism rather than the surrounding trim.
Replacing the ignition lock cover will improve the appearance of the assembly but will not repair a faulty ignition barrel, electrical ignition switch or steering lock mechanism.
Installation Notes
Carefully inspect the original ignition lock cover and surrounding dashboard components before removal.
Remove the existing trim using the appropriate method for the vehicle's ignition switch arrangement, taking care not to damage the dashboard covering or ignition lock assembly.
Check that the mounting area is clean and that any required retaining components are in good condition.
Position the replacement cover correctly and ensure it fits securely without excessive force.
Following installation, confirm that the ignition key can be inserted, turned and removed freely and that the cover does not interfere with normal ignition switch operation.
This kit is intended for ignition lock trim restoration and does not replace the complete ignition switch or lock barrel.
