What This Product Does
The tappet sits between the camshaft and inlet-valve mechanism. Pressurised engine oil acts on its internal hydraulic element to take up operating clearance as valve-train components heat, cool and wear.
Functions
- Conveys camshaft movement through the intake valve train
- Automatically compensates for valve-train operating clearance
- Supports controlled opening and closing of the inlet valves
- Maintains consistent contact within the valve mechanism
Technical Details
- Part number: 0PB109673F
- Component: hydraulic tappet
- Fitting position: intake or inlet valve train
- Diagram quantity: 12 per applicable engine assembly
- Supplied individually
- Installed with model-specific camshafts and camshaft-adjuster components
Symptoms of Fault
- Persistent tapping or ticking from the valve-train area
- Noise remaining after normal engine-oil pressure has developed
- Rough running or irregular inlet-valve operation
- Visible tappet or camshaft contact-surface wear during inspection
- Timing or misfire faults after the tappet has been confirmed as the cause
Why Replacement Matters
A worn, sticking or damaged tappet may be unable to maintain the intended clearance within the intake valve train. Similar symptoms can also result from low oil pressure, restricted lubrication passages, camshaft wear or timing-system faults, so diagnosis should be completed before replacement. Inspect the associated camshaft surfaces, oilways, fixings and adjuster components while access is available, and follow the applicable Porsche workshop procedure for assembly and timing.
FAQs
- Is this an intake or exhaust tappet?
This reference is identified for the intake or inlet valve train. Applicable exhaust tappets can use a different part number. - How many tappets are used?
The supplied exploded-diagram information specifies 12 for applicable engine assemblies. This product is supplied individually, so confirm the quantity needed for the repair. - Should all tappets be renewed together?
The correct repair scope depends on inspection results and the workshop procedure. Check every accessible tappet, camshaft contact surface and lubrication passage before deciding. - Can another fault cause tappet noise?
Yes. Oil condition, oil pressure, obstructed oilways, camshaft wear and timing-system problems can produce similar noises.

Hydraulic tappets are an important part of the Porsche 993 valve train, helping the engine run smoothly without the need for regular manual valve clearance adjustment.
What Does the Hydraulic Tappet Do?
The hydraulic tappet, also known as a hydraulic valve lifter, sits within the valve train and uses engine oil pressure to maintain the correct clearance between moving valve components.
Its main functions include:
- Maintaining correct valve clearance automatically.
- Reducing valve train noise.
- Supporting smooth valve operation.
- Helping maintain efficient engine performance.
- Reducing wear on camshaft and valve train components.
- Compensating for thermal expansion as the engine warms up.
A correctly functioning hydraulic tappet helps ensure quiet, reliable and efficient engine operation.
Why Do Hydraulic Tappets Fail?
Hydraulic tappets operate under constant load and rely on
clean engine oil to function correctly. Common causes of failure include:
- Oil contamination or sludge build-up.
- Low oil pressure.
- Internal wear after high mileage.
- Blocked oil passages.
- Poor maintenance or extended oil change intervals.
- Engine overheating.
- Wear to internal check valves or plungers.
When a tappet can no longer maintain oil pressure correctly, it may collapse or become noisy, causing tapping sounds from the valve train.
When Should the Hydraulic Tappet Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended if you notice:
- Persistent tappet ticking or tapping noise.
- Noisy valve train after warm-up.
- Rough running caused by poor valve operation.
- Loss of performance linked to valve train wear.
- Wear found during engine inspection.
- During cylinder head overhaul or engine rebuild.
Many Porsche specialists recommend replacing worn hydraulic tappets during major engine work to restore smooth operation and protect surrounding valve train components.
