The Fabspeed Porsche 944 Turbo (951) Street Performance Package is a comprehensive high-performance exhaust, intake and engine tuning upgrade designed to enhance horsepower, torque, turbocharger response and overall driving performance on Porsche 944 Turbo models manufactured between 1985 and 1991.
Fits:
- Porsche 944 Turbo 2.5L 8V 1985-88
- Porsche 944 Turbo 2.5L 8V 1989-91
- Porsche 944 Turbo S 2.5L 8V 1988
Developed specifically for the turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, this package combines Fabspeed's 3.0-inch Maxflo Performance Exhaust System, performance downpipe with sport catalytic converter, upgraded Turbo Outlet Top Pipe, BMC F1 Performance Air Filter and a DME performance chip upgrade.
Designed to improve exhaust gas flow and reduce restrictions within the factory intake and exhaust systems, the package helps the turbocharged engine operate more efficiently while delivering a deeper, sportier exhaust note.
The Maxflo exhaust system is manufactured from heavy-duty 16-gauge T304L stainless steel and features precision CNC mandrel-bent tubing for improved durability, corrosion resistance and consistent exhaust flow.
The upgraded Turbo Outlet Top Pipe replaces the original restrictive double-walled factory component, which can deteriorate and collapse internally over time, potentially affecting turbocharger performance.
Fabspeed advertises performance improvements of up to 95 horsepower and 80 lb-ft of torque, together with a weight reduction of approximately 25 lb (11.3kg). These are manufacturer-reported package figures, and actual results will vary depending on the vehicle's mechanical condition, configuration and selected upgrades.
Ideal for Porsche 944 Turbo enthusiasts seeking stronger acceleration, improved throttle response, enhanced turbocharger performance and a distinctive sports exhaust sound, this integrated upgrade provides a comprehensive performance solution for the classic Porsche 951.
What This Product Does:
The Fabspeed Street Performance Package is designed to improve the efficiency of the engine's intake, exhaust and electronic management systems.
By reducing exhaust restrictions and supporting improved engine calibration, the package helps the turbocharger operate more effectively and allows the engine to deliver stronger performance.
Its key functions include:
- Increased Horsepower: Improved exhaust flow, intake efficiency and appropriate engine tuning can support additional engine power.
- Improved Torque Delivery: Designed to increase available torque and provide stronger acceleration throughout the engine's operating range.
- Enhanced Turbocharger Response: The upgraded outlet pipe and less restrictive exhaust system help reduce backpressure and improve turbocharger performance.
- Improved Exhaust Gas Flow: The 3.0-inch (76mm) Maxflo exhaust provides a larger, more efficient passage for exhaust gases.
- Reduced Exhaust Restriction: Replaces restrictive original exhaust components with performance-oriented alternatives.
- Sportier Exhaust Sound: Produces a deeper, more distinctive exhaust note while retaining the character of the turbocharged Porsche engine.
- Improved Throttle Response: Enhanced airflow and appropriate engine calibration can provide more responsive acceleration.
- High-Performance Air Filtration: The BMC F1 Air Filter supports efficient intake airflow while filtering airborne contaminants.
- Engine Management Optimisation: The DME chip upgrade modifies engine calibration to improve performance for the specified engine configuration.
- Reduced Component Weight: The manufacturer reports an overall weight saving of approximately 25 lb compared with the original components.
- Corrosion Resistance: T304L stainless steel exhaust construction provides improved resistance to rust and deterioration.
- Improved Durability: Mandrel-bent tubing and robust construction are designed to withstand demanding exhaust operating conditions.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
The Fabspeed Street Performance Package is primarily a performance upgrade rather than a direct replacement for one failed component.
However, deterioration of the original exhaust, intake or turbocharger outlet components may indicate that repair or upgrading is beneficial.
Common signs include:
- Reduced Engine Performance: Restrictive or damaged exhaust components may contribute to reduced horsepower, torque and acceleration.
- Sluggish Turbocharger Response: Excessive exhaust backpressure can negatively affect turbocharger efficiency and boost response.
- Internal Turbo Outlet Pipe Collapse: The original double-walled outlet pipe can deteriorate internally, restricting exhaust gas flow.
- Loss of Power at Higher RPM: Exhaust restrictions may prevent the engine from delivering its expected performance at higher engine speeds.
- Corroded Exhaust Components: Ageing factory exhaust pipes, mufflers and connections may develop rust or structural deterioration.
- Exhaust Leaks: Cracked pipework, deteriorated gaskets or damaged connections may allow exhaust gases to escape.
- Excessive Exhaust Rattling: Loose internal muffler components, deteriorated mounting hardware or damaged pipework may cause metallic noises.
- Restricted Catalytic Converter: A damaged or blocked catalytic converter may increase exhaust backpressure and reduce performance.
- Clogged Air Filter: A heavily contaminated intake filter may restrict airflow and affect engine responsiveness.
- Inconsistent Turbo Boost: Boost pressure irregularities may result from faults in the turbocharger, wastegate, control system or associated pipework.
- Poor Throttle Response: Engine hesitation or delayed acceleration can occur when intake, exhaust or engine management systems are not functioning correctly.
- Damaged Exhaust Mountings: Corroded or weakened brackets and fixings may allow excessive exhaust movement.
- Unusual Exhaust Noise: Leaks or deteriorated muffler components may produce excessive noise or changes in exhaust tone.
Why Replacement / Upgrading Matters:
- Upgrading the factory intake and exhaust system with the Fabspeed Porsche 944 Turbo Street Performance Package provides an opportunity to enhance engine performance while replacing ageing or restrictive original components.
- The Porsche 944 Turbo relies on efficient exhaust gas flow and accurate engine management to deliver responsive turbocharged performance.
- Once exhaust gases pass through the turbocharger, excessive restriction in the outlet pipe, downpipe or exhaust system can increase backpressure and limit the engine's ability to operate efficiently.
- The original double-walled turbo outlet pipe is particularly vulnerable to internal deterioration, which can reduce the available exhaust flow area and negatively affect performance.
- Replacing this component with the Fabspeed Turbo Outlet Top Pipe helps eliminate the potential restriction associated with the original construction.
- The larger 3.0-inch Maxflo exhaust system and performance downpipe further support efficient exhaust gas discharge, potentially improving acceleration and turbocharger responsiveness.
- For vehicles retaining heavily aged factory exhaust components, replacing corroded or deteriorated parts can also help address exhaust leaks, rattling and structural weaknesses.
- The stainless steel construction provides excellent corrosion resistance, making it a durable alternative to ageing original exhaust pipework.
- The BMC F1 Performance Air Filter complements the exhaust improvements by supporting efficient intake airflow, while the optional DME performance chip allows the engine management calibration to be matched to the intended performance configuration.
- A correctly matched calibration is particularly important on turbocharged engines, where boost pressure, ignition timing and fuel delivery must operate together to maintain suitable engine conditions.
- Beyond performance, the Fabspeed package also enhances the distinctive exhaust character of the Porsche 944 Turbo, delivering a deeper and sportier sound.
- For enthusiasts undertaking restoration, performance modifications or track preparation, upgrading multiple related components together provides an integrated approach to improving engine breathing and exhaust system durability.
- The Fabspeed Porsche 944 Turbo Street Performance Package offers a comprehensive performance solution designed to improve exhaust efficiency, enhance turbocharger response and deliver a more engaging driving experience.
