Manufactured from premium T304L stainless steel, the Fabspeed system features precision mandrel-bent 3-inch tubing transitioning into 2-inch pipework. This configuration promotes efficient exhaust gas movement while maintaining suitable exhaust velocity for performance-focused operation.
By removing the restrictive factory catalytic converter assembly, the system provides a more direct exhaust gas pathway, allowing the turbocharger to discharge exhaust gases with reduced restriction. This can contribute to improved throttle response, faster engine response and increased power output.
Fabspeed advertises performance gains of approximately 25 wheel horsepower, with additional performance potential when combined with compatible ECU tuning. Actual results will depend on vehicle specification, engine condition and supporting modifications.
In addition to its performance benefits, the system creates a significantly louder and more aggressive exhaust note, with increased turbocharger sound, pronounced boxer-engine character and additional pops and burbles during gear changes and deceleration.
Constructed using high-quality components and hand TIG-welded in the USA, the system is designed for durability under demanding motorsport conditions.
Designed as a direct bolt-on replacement for the original catalytic converter and downpipe, the Fabspeed Race Competition Cat Bypass offers a performance-focused exhaust solution for Porsche 718 owners preparing vehicles for permitted track and competition use.
What This Product Does:
The Fabspeed Race Competition Cat Bypass with Downpipe replaces the factory catalytic converter and associated downpipe with a less restrictive exhaust section.
On the Porsche 718's turbocharged engine, exhaust gases leaving the turbine must pass through the downstream exhaust system. Restrictions in this pathway can increase pressure after the turbocharger, potentially affecting exhaust gas evacuation and turbine operating efficiency.
The Fabspeed system is designed to reduce this restriction using mandrel-bent stainless steel pipework and a catalyst-free exhaust pathway.
Its main functions include:
- Improving exhaust gas flow: Provides a less restrictive route for exhaust gases leaving the turbocharger.
- Reducing exhaust backpressure: Eliminates the flow restriction associated with the factory catalytic converter core.
- Supporting turbocharger response: Reduced downstream restriction can help improve the turbocharger's operating efficiency.
- Increasing performance potential: Fabspeed estimates gains of approximately 25 wheel horsepower compared with the original assembly.
- Enhancing throttle response: Improved exhaust gas evacuation can support more responsive acceleration.
- Producing a louder exhaust note: Creates a more aggressive exhaust sound suited to dedicated motorsport applications.
- Amplifying turbocharger sound: Makes turbocharger operation and associated exhaust sounds more noticeable.
- Enhancing gear-change acoustics: Produces more pronounced cracks, pops and burbles during shifting and deceleration.
- Supporting performance modifications: Can complement compatible exhaust and ECU tuning upgrades on competition vehicles.
- Directing exhaust gases: Maintains the exhaust gas pathway from the turbocharger towards the remaining exhaust system.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
The original Porsche 718 catalytic converter and downpipe assembly operates under demanding conditions, including high exhaust temperatures, vibration, pressure changes and repeated heating and cooling cycles.
Although designed for durability, the factory assembly may deteriorate through corrosion, contamination, overheating or physical damage.
Common symptoms indicating that the original catalytic converter or downpipe may require inspection, repair or replacement include:
- Reduced engine performance: A blocked or severely restricted catalytic converter may increase exhaust backpressure and reduce available engine power.
- Sluggish acceleration: Excessive exhaust restriction can affect turbocharger performance and engine responsiveness.
- Engine management warning light: Catalytic converter efficiency problems or oxygen sensor faults may trigger the check engine light.
- Catalytic converter efficiency codes: Fault codes such as P0420 may indicate below-threshold catalyst efficiency, although other faults can cause similar warnings.
- Metallic rattling: A damaged internal catalytic converter substrate may produce rattling noises during acceleration or idling.
- Exhaust leaks: Cracked pipework, damaged flanges or deteriorated connections may allow exhaust gases to escape.
- Blowing or hissing sounds: Leaking exhaust joints may produce unusual noises under acceleration.
- Visible corrosion or damage: Rust, fractured welds or physical damage can compromise the exhaust assembly.
- Excessive exhaust temperatures: A severely restricted converter may contribute to abnormal heat build-up.
- Unusual exhaust odours: A damaged or ineffective catalytic converter may contribute to increased or unusual exhaust smells.
- Failed emissions inspection: A deteriorated catalytic converter may no longer adequately reduce harmful exhaust pollutants.
- Abnormal turbocharger response: Significant downstream exhaust restrictions may affect turbocharger operation.
Why Replacement Matters:
Installing the Fabspeed Race Competition Cat Bypass with Downpipe is a performance-focused modification for Porsche 718 vehicles used exclusively in permitted motorsport or closed-circuit environments.
Unlike a conventional replacement catalytic converter, this system is designed primarily to minimise exhaust restriction and maximise exhaust sound rather than retain road-going emissions functionality.
Its catalyst-free construction offers a direct exhaust pathway, helping reduce the pressure against which the turbocharger discharges exhaust gases.
Upgrading to the Fabspeed competition system offers several benefits:
- Improved exhaust flow: Removes the restrictive catalytic converter core from the exhaust pathway.
- Reduced exhaust backpressure: Supports efficient exhaust gas discharge from the turbocharger.
- Increased horsepower potential: Fabspeed estimates approximately 25 additional wheel horsepower.
- Enhanced throttle response: Reduced restriction can contribute to more responsive acceleration.
- Greater turbocharger sound: Makes turbocharger noises more prominent during acceleration and gear changes.
- Aggressive motorsport exhaust tone: Produces a louder exhaust character compared with the factory catalytic converter assembly.
- Enhanced acceleration acoustics: Creates more noticeable pops, cracks and burbles during deceleration and shifting.
- Premium stainless steel construction: T304L stainless steel provides excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature durability.
- Precision manufacturing: Mandrel-bent tubing and hand TIG-welded construction support consistent exhaust flow and structural integrity.
- Compatible performance upgrades: Can complement Fabspeed's Maxflo Exhaust System and suitable competition ECU calibrations.
- Vehicle-specific fitment: Designed for compatible Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman turbocharged models.
- Direct bolt-on installation: Replaces the factory catalytic converter and downpipe without cutting or welding.
- Manufacturer warranty support: Backed by Fabspeed's Lifetime Warranty, subject to its terms and conditions.
This system is best suited to motorsport enthusiasts seeking maximum exhaust sound and improved exhaust flow for a dedicated competition vehicle.
NOTE: In the United Kingdom, sports catalytic converters and bypass pipes do not have type approval and are not legally permitted for use on vehicles manufactured after 1st March 2001. They are not MOT compliant and cannot be used on public roads. These components are intended solely for race and track use.
For vehicles manufactured before 1st March 2001, a non-type approved sports catalytic converter may be fitted, provided it offers comparable performance to the original and the vehicle continues to meet the applicable emissions standards for its age. The vehicle must still pass an MOT test.
If you are located outside the UK, please check your local laws and regulations to ensure compliance.
