- Porsche Boxster 981 Spyder 3.8L 2016
- Porsche Cayman GT4 3.8L 2015-16
The Fabspeed Porsche 981 Cayman GT4 / Boxster Spyder Competition Conversion Kit is a lightweight performance exhaust upgrade designed to transform an existing Fabspeed Motorsport Valvetronic Exhaust System into a louder, lighter and more aggressive competition-style exhaust configuration.
Fits:
- Porsche Boxster 981 Spyder 3.8L 2016
- Porsche Cayman GT4 3.8L 2015-16
Developed specifically for the Porsche 981 Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder models manufactured between 2015 and 2016, this conversion kit eliminates the valved exhaust section of the compatible Fabspeed system and replaces it with direct-flow stainless steel muffler bypass pipes.
The result is an uncompromising exhaust configuration that emphasises the distinctive sound of Porsche's naturally aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six engine.
The original Fabspeed Valvetronic Exhaust System provides adjustable exhaust sound through its electronically controlled, vacuum-actuated valve arrangement. This allows the driver to switch between quieter and more aggressive exhaust characteristics.
However, for Porsche enthusiasts who prefer maximum exhaust volume and a more focused motorsport experience, the additional valve hardware and associated sound-control features may no longer be required.
Fabspeed developed the Competition Conversion Kit to provide a straightforward alternative.
By replacing the valved section with fixed, free-flowing bypass pipes, the kit removes the need for exhaust valve operation in that section and delivers a consistently aggressive exhaust note.
Manufactured in-house by Fabspeed Motorsport from high-quality T304L stainless steel, the conversion pipes use a 2.5-inch (63.5 mm) diameter design to maintain an unrestricted exhaust path.
The kit also reduces exhaust system weight by approximately 11 lbs (5 kg) compared with the corresponding valved portion of the Fabspeed Motorsport exhaust.
This weight saving contributes to a lighter exhaust configuration, particularly desirable for track-focused vehicles where reducing unnecessary mass is an important consideration.
Installation is designed to be straightforward. The competition pipes bolt directly into the existing Fabspeed exhaust arrangement using the current Fabspeed AccuSeal clamps.
No cutting or welding is required, and the modification is reversible, allowing the original Fabspeed valved section to be reinstalled if a quieter exhaust configuration is required.
The Competition Conversion Kit is particularly suitable for dedicated track cars, motorsport-inspired builds and Porsche owners seeking the most aggressive sound available from their compatible Fabspeed exhaust system.
Important: This kit is only suitable for Porsche 981 Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder vehicles already equipped with the corresponding Fabspeed Motorsport Valvetronic Exhaust System. It is not compatible with the standard Porsche factory exhaust.
What This Product Does:
The Fabspeed Competition Conversion Kit replaces the valved section of the existing Fabspeed Motorsport Valvetronic Exhaust System with straight-through muffler bypass pipes.
Its primary functions include:
- Converts the Valved Exhaust into a Competition Configuration: Replaces the relevant valved section with fixed, direct-flow exhaust pipes.
- Eliminates Exhaust Valve Operation: Removes the adjustable sound-control function from the converted section.
- Creates a Louder Exhaust Note: Produces a consistently aggressive exhaust sound without the quieter valve setting.
- Enhances Flat-Six Engine Sound: Makes the distinctive 3.8-litre naturally aspirated Porsche engine more prominent.
- Reduces Exhaust Weight: Saves approximately 11 lbs compared with the original Fabspeed Valvetronic section.
- Provides Direct Exhaust Gas Flow: Uses straight-through pipework instead of the valved muffler arrangement.
- Supports Motorsport Applications: Provides a lightweight, high-volume exhaust configuration for appropriate track-focused use.
- Maintains Stainless Steel Durability: T304L stainless steel construction offers resistance to corrosion and high exhaust temperatures.
- Preserves Compatible Fabspeed Connections: Uses the existing exhaust mounting arrangement and AccuSeal clamps.
- Allows Reversible Conversion: The original Fabspeed valved section can be reinstalled without permanent exhaust modification.
- Simplifies the Converted Exhaust Section: Eliminates the valves and their moving mechanisms from the replaced portion of the system.
- Maintains the Existing Catalytic Converters: As a cat-back conversion, it does not require removing the vehicle's catalytic converters.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
The Fabspeed Competition Conversion Kit is primarily an exhaust performance upgrade, not a routine maintenance component.
However, it may also be considered when an existing compatible Valvetronic exhaust section has become damaged or when an owner wishes to eliminate the associated valve mechanism.
Common problems affecting the existing exhaust system include:
- Exhaust sound does not change when the valves are operated.
- A valve becomes stuck open or closed.
- Inconsistent response from the valve system.
- Metallic rattling around the valve assembly.
- Irregular or incomplete valve movement.
- Ticking, hissing or blowing sounds.
- Unexpected exhaust noise.
- Soot marks around pipe connections.
- Exhaust fumes near the vehicle.
- Increased noise under acceleration.
- Heavy rust or corrosion.
- Weakened welds.
- Cracked mounting points.
- Perforated pipe sections.
- Loose or damaged hardware.
Why Replacement / Upgrading Matters:
Installing the Fabspeed Competition Conversion Kit changes the character and weight of an existing Valvetronic exhaust system.
The main advantages are reduced weight, simplified exhaust construction and a more aggressive, consistently loud exhaust note.
- Maximum Exhaust Sound: Removes the quieter valved operating mode and delivers a consistently aggressive exhaust character.
- Motorsport-Inspired Driving Experience: Emphasises the sound of the Porsche 981 GT4 and Spyder's naturally aspirated flat-six engine.
- Approximately 11 lb Weight Reduction: Eliminates weight associated with the replaced Valvetronic section.
- Simplified Exhaust Arrangement: Removes moving exhaust valve mechanisms from the converted section.
- Direct Exhaust Flow: Uses 2.5-inch stainless steel bypass pipes.
- Durable Stainless Steel Construction: Manufactured from corrosion-resistant T304L stainless steel.
- Compatible with Existing Fabspeed Systems: Designed specifically for the corresponding Fabspeed Valvetronic Exhaust.
- Reversible Modification: Allows the original valved components to be reinstalled.
- No Cutting or Welding: Uses the existing exhaust connections for bolt-on installation.
- Ideal for Track-Focused Builds: Provides a lighter, louder exhaust configuration.
- Reduced Dependence on Valve Components: Eliminates valve-related mechanical operation from the replaced section.
- Fabspeed Motorsport Engineering: Manufactured by a specialist performance exhaust producer.
