The sensor measures the temperature of exhaust gases and sends this information to the vehicle's engine management system. Accurate exhaust-temperature information allows the control system to monitor operating conditions and, depending on the vehicle and engine specification, manage strategies designed to protect emissions equipment, turbocharger and exhaust components from excessive temperatures.
A faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor can provide inaccurate readings or stop communicating altogether, potentially triggering warning lights, diagnostic fault codes and protective engine-management strategies.
What This Product Does:
The exhaust gas temperature sensor, commonly abbreviated to EGT sensor, monitors the temperature of gases flowing through a specific part of the exhaust system.
Exhaust temperatures can become extremely high, particularly during high engine loads and certain emissions-control operating conditions.
The sensor converts temperature information into an electrical signal that can be interpreted by the vehicle's control system.
Depending on the particular Porsche application, this information can be used to:
- Monitor exhaust gas temperature
- Support engine-management calculations
- Protect exhaust-system components from excessive heat
- Support emissions-system operation
- Monitor catalytic converter or particulate-filter operating conditions where applicable
- Assist thermal-management strategies
- Help protect turbocharger and exhaust components where applicable
- Detect abnormal exhaust-temperature conditions
Accurate temperature information is therefore important for both performance monitoring and component protection.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
A faulty EGT sensor may produce several symptoms depending on the vehicle and type of failure.
Possible signs include:
- Check-engine warning light
- Exhaust or emissions-system warning
- Stored diagnostic trouble codes
- Implausible exhaust-temperature readings
- Intermittent temperature readings
- Loss of sensor communication
- Reduced engine performance
- Protective or limp-home mode
- Changes in emissions-system operation
- Increased fuel consumption
- Regeneration-related problems on vehicles equipped with a particulate filter
- Recurring warning messages after fault codes are cleared
Some sensor failures may initially cause no noticeable drivability symptoms other than a warning light.
Why Replacement Matters:
A correctly operating exhaust gas temperature sensor allows the vehicle's control system to know what is happening thermally inside the exhaust system.
Replacing a confirmed faulty sensor helps:
- Restore accurate exhaust-temperature monitoring
- Resolve associated sensor fault codes
- Restore correct engine-management information
- Support emissions-system operation
- Maintain thermal protection strategies
- Reduce the risk of incorrect protective intervention
- Support correct particulate-filter operation where applicable
- Restore reliable communication between the exhaust system and control unit
Ignoring a failed sensor can leave the engine-management system without accurate information needed for exhaust thermal management.
