What This Product Does
Exhaust valves open to let spent combustion gases leave the cylinders, then close against their seats to seal the combustion chambers. Their condition is relevant when investigating compression loss or assessing a cylinder head during dismantling.
Functions
- Control the passage of exhaust gases from each cylinder.
- Seal against the valve seats when closed.
- Provide replacement exhaust valves for cylinder head refurbishment.
Technical Details
- Kit contents: four exhaust valves.
- Individual valve reference: 61610540650.
- Specified engine capacity: 1.6ltr.
- The 912 assembly diagram covers 1965–69 and specifies four exhaust valves.
- The 356B / 356C assembly diagram covers 1960–1965 and identifies this valve as suitable for unleaded applications with 1600 C/SC engines.
Symptoms of Fault
Possible signs of valve sealing problems include uneven compression, persistent misfiring, irregular idling and reduced engine output. Leakage detected at the exhaust during a cylinder leak-down test can help identify an exhaust-side sealing issue. These symptoms require diagnosis rather than automatic valve replacement.
Why Replacement Matters
Renewal is appropriate when inspection identifies burnt, distorted or worn valves that no longer seal correctly. During cylinder head work, assess the seats, guides, springs and associated hardware as well: replacing valves alone does not address wear elsewhere in the assembly. Compare the four-valve contents with the planned repair before dismantling.
FAQs
What is included?
Four exhaust valves. Do not assume that guides, springs, seals or other installation components are included.
Which checks help identify valve leakage?
Compression measurements and a cylinder leak-down test help establish whether further cylinder head inspection is needed.
Does exhaust smoke confirm that valves need replacing?
No. Guide wear and other engine faults can also cause smoke, so establish the cause before selecting replacement components.
