Porsche 964 Carrera RS Hardback Book.
After almost two decades, Porsche resurrected one of the
most revered names in its history with the introduction of the 964 Carrera RS
for the 1992 model year. Inspired by the legendary 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, the new
model combined lightweight engineering, motorsport-derived technology and an
uncompromising focus on driver engagement, quickly establishing itself as one
of the most desirable air-cooled 911s ever produced.
The origins of the 964 Carrera RS, however, began well before its official launch. Its story can be traced back to the 1990 Porsche Carrera Cup race car, developed for Porsche's newly introduced one-make championship. As the very first car to compete in what would become the globally successful Porsche Carrera Cup series, the Carrera Cup racer laid the technical foundations for the road-going Carrera RS. Many of the engineering principles, weight-saving measures and performance enhancements developed for the competition car would ultimately shape the production Carrera RS, creating a direct link between Porsche's motorsport programme and one of its most celebrated road cars.
The Definitive Reference on the Porsche 964 Carrera RS
The 964 Carrera RS is far more than a beautifully illustrated coffee-table book. It is an exceptionally detailed historical reference, documenting the complete development of the Porsche 964 generation, the creation of the Carrera Cup race car and the evolution of every major Carrera RS derivative.
Drawing upon years of meticulous research, previously
unpublished material and extensive factory documentation, the book examines
every significant model in the 964 Carrera RS family, including:
- Porsche 964 Carrera RS Touring
- Porsche 964 Carrera RS Clubsport
- Porsche 964 RS 3.8
- Porsche 964 RSR 3.8
- Porsche Carrera Cup USA
- Porsche RS America
Although the Carrera Cup USA and RS America were developed specifically for the North American market rather than being true Carrera RS models, they formed an important part of Porsche's early-1990s performance strategy. Their development, technical specification and market significance are therefore explored alongside their European counterparts, providing readers with a complete understanding of the wider 964 RS story.
Essential Reading for Porsche Enthusiasts and Collectors
Whether you are a Porsche owner, collector, automotive historian, motorsport enthusiast or simply passionate about the air-cooled 911, this book delivers one of the most comprehensive studies ever published on the Porsche 964 Carrera RS.
From the earliest Carrera Cup race cars to the ultra-rare RS 3.8 and RSR competition models, every stage of the Carrera RS's evolution is documented in remarkable detail. Combining technical analysis, production history and personal accounts from those directly involved in its creation, the book preserves the story of one of Porsche's most iconic lightweight sports cars for future generations.
More Than Three and a Half Years of Research
The creation of 964 Carrera RS represents over three and a half years of dedicated research by author Christoph Mäder.
During this time, more than forty key individuals who played a direct role in the development, production and competition history of the Porsche 964 Carrera RS were interviewed. Contributors include Porsche engineers, designers, project managers, factory personnel, assembly line specialists, motorsport organisers, racing team principals and professional drivers whose first-hand knowledge provides unique insight into the creation of these exceptional cars.
Collectively, these interviews generated over 100 hours of exclusive source material, revealing previously unpublished information, technical detail and personal recollections unavailable elsewhere. Rather than relying solely on secondary research, the book presents the history of the Carrera RS through the voices of those who helped design, engineer, build and race it.
Supported by Original Porsche Factory Documentation
The research extends far beyond personal interviews.
Factory-issued Certificates of Authenticity, original build sheets and production documentation from numerous vehicles were carefully analysed to provide detailed information on chassis numbers, production specifications, optional equipment and the technical differences between individual Carrera RS variants.
Further research included original Porsche technical literature, internal company documentation, engineering records and contemporary archive material. Original Porsche parts catalogues were also examined in detail, helping identify numerous production changes, model-specific characteristics and engineering revisions across the Carrera RS, RS 3.8 and related derivatives.
One of the book's greatest highlights is its extensive collection of previously unpublished photographs taken inside Werk 2 at Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory during the assembly of the Porsche 964 Carrera RS. These rare images provide an extraordinary behind-the-scenes view of the production process, capturing details that never appeared in official press photography or period publications.
The combination of exclusive interviews, factory documentation, build records, technical literature, original parts catalogues and unpublished photography enables the history of the Porsche 964 Carrera RS to be reconstructed with an exceptional level of accuracy, making this one of the most authoritative publications ever produced on the subject.
Designed with the Same Philosophy as the Carrera RS
The book itself has been created with the same philosophy that defined the Porsche 964 Carrera RS: uncompromising quality, precision engineering and meticulous attention to detail.
Every aspect of the publication has been carefully considered—not only to document the Carrera RS accurately, but to produce a collector's book worthy of the car it celebrates.
Its colour palette draws direct inspiration from original design studies created by Porsche's own styling department during the development of the Carrera RS, creating a subtle visual connection between the publication and the vehicle itself.
With the exception of the premium paper stock sourced from Gothenburg, Sweden, every stage of production took place in Germany. Manufacturing involved three specialist printing companies, an industrial bookbinder and a traditional hand bookbinding workshop, resulting in a publication distinguished as much by its craftsmanship as by its content.
Like the Porsche 964 Carrera RS itself, every copy is
individually numbered and strictly limited. Available in English, German and
French, together with two distinct specifications, collectors can choose the
edition that best reflects their own preferences—much like selecting colours
and options when ordering a Porsche from the factory.
- English (1600 copies)
- German (964 copies)
- French (260 copies)
The exclusive Special Edition features a premium linen-bound cover and is offered in four carefully selected colour combinations, further enhancing its appeal as a collector's item.
More than simply documenting the Porsche 964 Carrera RS, this publication has been created to become part of its legacy—combining definitive research, exceptional craftsmanship and enduring collectability in a volume that belongs on the bookshelf of every serious Porsche enthusiast.
