911 Bosch Direct Fit COP Ignition Coils -
High-Performance Ignition Upgrade for Porsche 911 G-Model (1975–1989)
6x coilpacks for your 911 coil on plug conversion
The Adapt Motorsports Bosch Direct Fit COP Ignition Coils offer a modern ignition upgrade for Porsche 911 G-Model (1975–89) engines undergoing EFI and aftermarket ECU conversions. These proven, high-performance Bosch coils provide a strong, consistent spark and mount directly into the original plug holes for a secure, high-integrity installation.

These coils require spark plugs with a smaller ceramic to fit correctly. Plugs such as IW22 iridiums work well.
Designed specifically for aftermarket fuel injection and engine management systems, these coils are not compatible with the original DME controller. They require an upgraded ECU and wiring loom, making them an essential component in performance builds, restomods or distributor-delete conversions. Adapt Motorsports provides pinout information and ECU setup guidance, while installation is typically integrated into a broader EFI upgrade project.
When removing the original ignition components, these coils
work in conjunction with the Adapt Motorsports Ignition Sync Module—installed
in the former distributor location—to provide accurate engine position sensing
for precise ECU control.
These coils fit securely in the original plug holes. For use as lower coils in twin-plug applications, we recommend adding a retention tab from the lower rocker cover bolt and a heat shield to safeguard the coil from exhaust heat.
These ignition coils deliver tested reliability, strong spark energy, and proven Bosch performance, making them ideal for enhancing throttle response, tuning accuracy, and ignition efficiency on modified Porsche 911 engines.
What Do COP Ignition Coils Do?
Coil-On-Plug (COP) ignition coils provide a dedicated
ignition source at each spark plug, delivering improved spark strength and
timing precision compared with older single-coil and distributor systems.
Core Functions:
- Deliver high-energy spark directly at the plug for cleaner combustion.
- Improve ignition timing accuracy with standalone ECU control.
- Support performance tuning, higher RPM stability and EFI upgrades.
- Eliminate the need for ignition leads and distributor-based systems.
- Enhance throttle response, efficiency, and engine smoothness.
These coils modernise classic Porsche 911 engines for performance and reliability aligned with contemporary ignition technology.
Why Do Traditional Porsche Ignition Components Fail?
Original-style ignition systems in 911 G-Models include ageing components prone to deterioration after decades of use.
Common Causes of Failure Include:
- Heat
stress weakening ignition coils and internal windings.
- Distributor
wear, including worn bearings and mechanical advance issues.
- Cracked
caps or degraded ignition leads causing inconsistent spark delivery.
- Oil
contamination or moisture ingress.
- Spark scatter at high RPM due to mechanical limitations.
When ignition strength deteriorates, drivability, tuning accuracy and engine performance are noticeably compromised.
Why Replace or Upgrade to Adapt Motorsports Direct Fit COP Coils?
Upgrading to a COP conversion offers significant improvements in consistency, efficiency, and performance—particularly in EFI-equipped engines.
Key Benefits:
- High-energy, reliable spark delivery for enhanced combustion.
- Compatible specifically with aftermarket EFI and standalone
- ECUs. Direct-fit Bosch coils proven for durability and performance.
- Secure installation into original spark plug holes.
- Ideal for distributor-delete conversions and modern ignition control.
- Suitable for twin-plug applications with lower-coil retention tab and heat shield (recommended).
- Requires spark plugs with smaller ceramic sections—such as Denso IW22 Iridium—for correct fitment.
These coils are engineered to support modern engine management strategies, making them essential for high-performance or restomod Porsche 911 builds.
Highlights
- Bosch direct-fit COP ignition coils for Porsche 911 G-Model 75–89.

Replace the coil when any of the following apply:
- Out-of-spec resistance on primary or secondary (measured with DVM). If primary > ~1 Ω or secondary well outside the 5–9 kΩ region.
- Intermittent misfire(s), rough idle, loss of power, or poor fuel economy that follow coil diagnostics. Ignition coils degrade and can produce weak/inconsistent sparks before total failure.
- Check Engine Light with misfire codes (P0300–P030x) that point to a particular cylinder and a coil swap test proves the coil is at fault.
- Visible damage (cracked housing, carbon tracking/arcing, oil contamination of electrical terminals, corroded connectors). These are signs of imminent failure or arcing that can damage plugs/caps.
- Age / preventive maintenance: rubber seals, insulation and internal windings deteriorate with heat and time; on older cars it’s common to replace coils as part of ignition refresh.
Common failure modes / symptoms
- Cylinder misfires / rough running (single cylinder or random).
- Hard starts or no-start if coil output falls below what’s needed to light the plug.
- Check Engine Light with misfire codes (P0300, P0301… etc).
- Intermittent stalling or power loss under load (coil heating causes intermittent fault).
- Arcing / carbon tracking visible on coil body or cap — can cause cross-firing or misfires.
- Failed connectors / harness corrosion causing poor coil drive — sometimes harness/connectors are the root cause rather than the coil itself.
