Information
Timing Chain Guide & Tensioner Guide replacement set, consisting of:
2x 99610517353/1 - OE Match Timing Chain Guides
2x 99610517552/1 - OE Match Timing Chain Tensioner Guides
Manufactured to closely replicate the original Porsche components, this set provides a complete replacement for the timing chain guide and tensioner guide wear surfaces on compatible Porsche engines.
Fits:
Porsche 986 Boxster 2.5L / 2.7L / 3.2L 1997 - 2002
Porsche 996 3.4L 1998 - 2001
Diagram Ref No 33 & 30
The timing chain guide & tensioner guide set includes four precision-engineered plastic guides designed to match the original Porsche timing system components in fit, shape, and performance. When installed, these guides support the timing chain and help maintain correct chain tension and alignment throughout engine operation.
The timing chain guides and tensioner guides provide support and controlled routing for the timing chain, keeping it properly positioned as it rotates over the cam and crank sprockets. They work with the hydraulic tensioner to maintain correct chain tension, helping preserve accurate valve timing and reduce chain slack or noise.
Function:
• Timing Chain Guides (OE ref no 99610517353): Provide a wear-resistant surface that the timing chain runs against, supporting proper alignment and reducing chain vibration.
• Tensioner Guides (OE ref no 99610517552): Work in conjunction with the timing chain tensioner to keep chain tension stable, absorbing dynamic loads and preventing slack or chain chatter.
Together, the guides help ensure smooth, quiet chain operation, accurate timing, and long-term engine reliability.
Timing chain guides and tensioner guides are wear items in Porsche engines. Over time, original guide surfaces can wear, crack, or generate plastic debris due to heat and friction. Worn guides can lead to chain slack, noise, inaccurate valve timing, or accelerated chain and sprocket wear. Replacing them with OE Match components restores proper chain support, reduces operational noise, and helps protect expensive internal timing components.
When to replace:
• During timing chain service or overhaul
• If timing chain rattle / noise is detected at start-up or idle
• When engine has high mileage
• If prior guides show wear, cracking, or plastic debris
• As part of preventive maintenance on performance or daily-use engines

What This Product Does:
- The timing chain tensioner is a hydraulic (typically oil-fed) or spring-loaded device that takes up slack in the timing chain drive system. Without correct tension, the chain can “slap”, skip a tooth, or jump, which can cause serious engine timing errors.
- In an engine like the Porsche performance flat-six, accurate timing is critical. The tensioner ensures the chain remains properly seated against the guides/rails and avoids noise, mis-timing, or eventual failure.
- Because modern Porsche engines often use duplex chains, intermediate shafts and high rev operation, a precise tensioner is essential for durability, reliability and performance.
When You Should Consider Replacement:
- You hear rattling, clattering or ticking noises from the timing‐cover area on startup or idle — a classic symptom of a loose timing chain.
- Your car triggers engine fault codes related to camshaft timing, crankshaft–cam correlation, or variable valve timing errors, indicating possible timing chain slack or timing drive issues.
- You are doing major engine work (e.g., timing cover removal, chain/guide replacement) — since the tensioner is integral to the timing chain system, it’s prudent to replace it at the same time for full reliability.
- The engine has high mileage or service history, and you want to pre-emptively safeguard the chain drive.
- On visual inspection (if accessible) you find slack in the timing chain, worn guides/rails, or old/deteriorated tensioner components.
Why Replacement Matters:
- Engine protection: A faulty tensioner can allow the timing chain to jump or skip, which risks piston-to-valve contact, major engine damage, and costly repairs.
- Maintains precise timing & performance: Correct chain tension ensures accurate valve timing, smooth idle, full power delivery and reliability.
- Eliminates noise & improves reliability: Replacing a worn tensioner removes chain-slap noise and helps prevent future failure.
- Cost efficient when engine access is open: Since accessing the tensioner and chain drive requires substantial labour, replacing the tensioner while you’re already there avoids further job later.

What This Product Does:
- The “tensioner blade” refers to a guide or support element in the timing chain system that helps apply correct pressure or alignment on the chain, often in combination with a chain tensioner or guide rail.
- When the timing chain runs between the crankshaft and camshafts (or intermediate shafts) it needs not only the chain and tensioner, but also supporting blades/rails/arms to manage movement, reduce slack and keep the chain tracking correctly.
- The tensioner blade part is one of the curated OEM components that helps ensure accurate timing drive by maintaining chain-contact, reducing vibration, guiding the chain — thereby supporting long-term durability and correct engine timing.
When You Should Consider Replacement:
- The timing chain system is being serviced (e.g., chain/guide/tensioner replacement) — as the blade is likely exposed or used in that service path.
- There are timing-related issues: rattling or clattering from the timing cover area, especially on cold start or idle — which can indicate slack or improper chain tracking.
- Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to camshaft/chain timing errors — because a damaged or worn blade may allow chain deflection or mistracking.
- Visual inspection (if accessible) reveals the blade or guide is worn, cracked, missing, or otherwise compromised.
- High mileage or extended service intervals — the supporting components around the chain wear, and a worn blade can expedite chain wear or guide rail wear.
Why Replacement Matters:
- Maintains engine timing integrity: If the blade that guides or supports the chain is compromised, the chain may skip, jump or wear prematurely — leading to timing errors and potential engine damage.
- Reduces noise & prolongs component life: Components like the tensioner blade help damp chain vibration and keep tensioners/rails from excessive wear. Replacing it helps preserve the chain drive system.
- Cost-effective preventive repair: When you already have access to the timing system (front cover off, chain out) replacing components such as the blade prevents future labour for incremental failures.
