The timing chain synchronises engine rotation between the crankshaft and camshafts. Correct timing chain operation is essential for accurate valve timing, smooth running, engine performance, and long-term reliability.
Functions
• Replaces the engine timing chain
• Helps synchronise crankshaft and camshaft movement
• Supports accurate valve timing
• Helps maintain smooth engine running and performance
• Used during timing chain, camshaft drive, or engine rebuild service
• Replaces stretched, noisy, worn, or damaged timing chains
• OE Match replacement for Porsche engine timing system repair.
Why Replace This Part?
Timing chains are highly loaded engine components and can wear, stretch, become noisy, or suffer damage over time. A worn or stretched timing chain may cause timing noise, poor running, fault codes, reduced performance, or incorrect camshaft timing. Replacing the timing chain helps restore correct engine timing and protects related timing system components.
When to Replace This Part
• Timing chain noise or rattle is present
• Timing chain stretch is detected
• Camshaft timing faults or related engine codes are present
• Engine performance is reduced or running is uneven
• Timing chain guides, tensioners, or camshaft drive parts are being replaced
• Engine rebuild or major timing service is being carried out
• Preventative replacement is required during Porsche engine maintenance
Where it fits on the car
This timing chain fits within the engine timing / camshaft drive system on Porsche Boxster, Cayman, 997, and 991 models. Exact chain position can vary depending on engine type and timing layout.

The kit contains two 142-link closed timing chains, one 60-link closed chain and two timing chain tensioners. It is suitable for selected Porsche 987.2, 981, 997.2 and 991.1 engines.
What Does the Timing Chain Kit Do?
The camshaft timing chains transfer rotation from the crankshaft to the camshafts, keeping valve operation correctly synchronised with piston movement.
The oil pump drive chain transfers mechanical drive to the oil pump, which circulates pressurised engine oil through the lubrication system.
Both systems are critical to reliable engine operation.
Why Do Timing Chains and Tensioners Wear?
Timing components operate continuously whenever the engine is running. Over time, wear can develop through:
High mileage Chain and tensioner wear Poor or infrequent oil servicing Contaminated engine oil Incorrect chain tension Wear to associated guides or sprockets Previous internal engine problemsA worn timing system can produce chain noise or timing-related faults and, in severe cases, may affect correct camshaft timing.
When Should They Be Replaced?
Timing components should be inspected if there is abnormal chain noise, timing-related fault codes, excessive chain wear or evidence of tensioner problems.
They should also be carefully assessed during an engine rebuild or other major work where the timing system is already accessible.
Associated guides, sprockets and other timing components should be inspected at the same time.
Checks During Installation
When replacing the timing chains, also inspect:
- Timing chain guide rails
- Chain sprockets
- Camshaft timing components
- Oil pump drive components
- Tensioner contact surfaces
- Engine oil condition
- Oil passages
- Related seals and fasteners
Correct engine timing must be established using the appropriate Porsche engine timing procedure and specialist tools.

What This Product Does
The timing chains transfer crankshaft rotation to the camshafts so that valve operation remains correctly synchronised with piston movement. The separate oil pump chain and sprocket components transmit drive from the crankshaft to the engine oil pump.
Functions
- Connects the crankshaft and camshaft timing assemblies
- Transfers drive to the engine oil pump
- Supports controlled chain travel through the supplied rails
- Maintains the intended relationship between the chains and sprockets
- Allows related timing-drive wear components to be renewed during the same repair
Symptoms of Fault
- Increasing chain rattle during cold starting
- Persistent mechanical noise from the timing-chain area
- Timing deviation or camshaft correlation faults
- Rough running associated with timing drift
- Visible wear or damage to chain guide components
- Plastic or metallic debris discovered during engine inspection
Why Replacement Matters
Chains, guides, tensioning components and sprockets operate as a connected system. Renewing worn parts during an engine rebuild or diagnosed timing repair helps restore controlled chain movement and accurate valve timing while reducing the likelihood of repeat dismantling caused by retained wear components. Correct engine locking, timing procedures and tightening specifications must be followed during installation.
FAQs
- Does the kit include oil pump drive parts?
Yes. The supplied inventory includes the oil pump chain, tensioner blade and oil pump sprocket. - Are both camshaft timing chains supplied?
Yes. The kit contains two 9A110514203 chains. - Should every listed component be replaced together?
The required repair scope depends on inspection and diagnosis, although renewing accessible matched wear components can help avoid repeated labour. - Is specialist installation recommended?
Yes. Timing work requires engine-specific locking equipment, assembly procedures and torque settings.
Check fitment for your specific vehicle, model year and engine before ordering.
