The Camshaft Position Sensor plays a vital role in monitoring the precise timing and position of each camshaft. This information is sent to the engine control module (ECM), which also relies on signals from sensors such as the crankshaft position sensor and knock sensors. Using these inputs, the ECM adjusts ignition timing and fuel injection—advancing or retarding timing based on driving conditions like heavy load or changes in air pressure.
When a camshaft position sensor begins to fail, it can trigger a check engine light and, in severe cases, may force the vehicle into limp mode to protect the engine.

The camshaft position sensor—often called the CMP sensor—provides real-time camshaft position data to the ECU. Symptoms of a Failing Camshaft Position Sensor
