What Do the Rear Brake Pads Do?
Rear brake pads are a critical component of your Porsche's braking system. When hydraulic pressure is applied, the brake pads clamp against the rear brake discs, generating the friction needed to slow and safely stop the vehicle.
Their primary functions include:
- Providing controlled rear braking performance.
- Maintaining balanced braking between the front and rear axles.
- Supporting Porsche ABS, PSM and traction control systems.
- Delivering smooth, progressive pedal feel.
- Providing reliable stopping power in all driving conditions.
- Helping maximise braking stability during cornering and emergency braking.
Although the front brakes provide the majority of the stopping force, the rear brake pads play an essential role in maintaining vehicle balance and overall braking efficiency.
Why Do Rear Brake Pads Wear Out?
Brake pads are designed as consumable service components and
gradually wear during normal use. Common causes include:
- Continuous friction against the brake discs.
- High temperatures generated during braking.
- Frequent urban stop-start driving.
- Spirited road driving. Track day use.
- Natural wear of the friction material.
- Brake disc wear affecting pad contact.
- High mileage.
As the friction material becomes thinner, braking efficiency gradually decreases and replacement becomes necessary.
When Should the Rear Brake Pads Be Replaced?
