The spring clip forms part of the rear brake caliper assembly and helps retain and stabilise the brake pads in their correct position. Maintaining the correct spring tension helps prevent unnecessary pad movement and associated brake noise while allowing the braking system to operate as intended.
What Does the Brake Pad Spring Clip Do?
The spring clip applies tension to the brake pads within the caliper assembly, helping keep them correctly located when the brakes are released and during normal driving.
This reduces unwanted movement of the pads and forms an important part of the brake pad retaining hardware.
Why Does It Fail?
Brake pad spring clips operate in a demanding environment and are continually exposed to heat, water, road salt, brake dust and temperature changes.
Over time they can deteriorate because of:
- Corrosion
- Loss of spring tension
- Heat cycling
- Physical distortion
- Damage during previous brake servicing
- Heavy contamination
- General age-related deterioration
A corroded or distorted spring should not simply be reused because it may no longer retain the brake pads as intended.
When Should It Be Replaced?
Replacement should be considered if the spring
clip is:
- Heavily corroded
- Bent or distorted
- Cracked or damaged
- Missing from the caliper
- No longer providing adequate spring tension
The clips should always be inspected when replacing the rear brake pads or carrying out caliper maintenance.
Checks During Replacement
When servicing the rear brakes, also inspect:
- Rear brake pads
- Brake discs
- Brake pad wear sensors
- Caliper pistons and dust seals
- Caliper mounting hardware
- Brake pad retaining components
- Opposite-side spring clip
Any brake hardware showing significant corrosion, distortion or damage should be replaced rather than reused.
Porsche 958 Cayenne Brake Pad Springs, Clips & Caliper Hardware
Brake pad springs and retaining hardware are small but important components within the Porsche Cayenne braking system. They help correctly locate the brake pads within the caliper and reduce unwanted movement as the brakes are applied and released.
Because these components operate close to the brake disc and caliper, they are exposed to considerable heat as well as water, road salt and brake dust. Corrosion or loss of spring tension can make replacement necessary during routine brake servicing.
OE Match provides a replacement rear brake pad spring clip kit for applicable Porsche 958 Cayenne 3.0L to 4.8L models, including diesel variants, from June 2010 onwards.

Keep your classic Porsche braking at its best with this Genuine Porsche Rear Brake Expander Spring. This small but essential component sits inside the rear disc brake assembly on early Porsche 911, 912 and some 914 models equipped with solid (non-ventilated) rear discs.
Fits:
Porsche 912 1969
Porsche 911 T 1969

The expander spring, also known as a tension or retaining spring, is a precision-engineered piece of brake hardware designed to maintain correct pad alignment and eliminate unwanted movement in the caliper assembly. Although minor in appearance, it plays a major role in ensuring the brake pads sit securely and function smoothly.
This spring helps to:
• Keep the brake pads correctly positioned inside the rear caliper
• Maintain proper tension in the brake assembly
• Reduce vibration and brake noise (rattle/chatter)
• Support even brake pad wear
• Promote consistent braking performance.
If this spring weakens, wears out, or breaks, the pads can shift or rattle, leading to noise, uneven wear, and reduced braking precision.
Over decades of use, heat cycles, corrosion, and general wear cause these springs to lose tension. Common signs that it’s time to replace include:
• Rattling or clicking noises from the rear brakes
• Uneven brake pad wear
• Pads that don’t retract smoothly
• Caliper movement or vibration
• During a brake rebuild or classic restoration
Because this is a classic-model component, many cars still on the road are using original hardware that is long overdue for renewal.
Replace the expander spring:
• Whenever fitting new rear pads
• During any brake system overhaul If you notice noise, pad movement, or irregular wear
• As part of routine maintenance on classic Porsche models, especially those with solid rear brake discs
• Whenever the caliper has been disassembled If the spring shows any signs of corrosion, fatigue, or deformation
For best results, always replace springs in pairs per caliper, as specified by Porsche.
