What Does a Rear Brake Caliper Overhaul Kit Do?
A brake caliper overhaul kit replaces the critical wear components inside the caliper that naturally deteriorate over time. New piston seals restore hydraulic sealing, while fresh dust protection caps keep moisture, dirt and brake dust away from the pistons to ensure reliable operation.
The overhaul helps to:
- Restore smooth piston movement.
- Maintain correct hydraulic pressure.
- Prevent brake fluid leaks.
- Protect pistons against corrosion.
- Promote even rear brake pad wear.
- Improve braking consistency and pedal feel.
- Extend the service life of the original Brembo calipers.
Rebuilding the original calipers allows you to retain the factory Brembo braking system while restoring its original performance.
Why Do Rear Brake Calipers Need Rebuilding?
Rear brake calipers are continually exposed to heat,
moisture, road contamination and repeated braking cycles. Over time, internal
components naturally deteriorate. Common causes include:
- Heat generated during braking.
- Ageing and hardening of piston seals.
- Split or deteriorated dust caps.
- Moisture entering the caliper.
- Corrosion around the pistons.
- Contaminated brake fluid.
- Seized or sticking pistons.
- Worn bleed valves.
- High mileage and long-term use.
Ignoring worn seals can eventually result in sticking calipers, uneven brake pad wear, brake fluid leaks and reduced braking performance.
When Should the Rear Brake Calipers Be Overhauled?
A complete rebuild is recommended whenever:
Rear brake pistons become stiff or seize. Dust caps split or perish. Brake fluid leaks develop. Rear brake pads wear unevenly. The calipers are removed for refurbishment. During a complete brake system restoration. Preparing the vehicle for fast road or track use. As preventative maintenance on higher mileage vehicles.Rebuilding both rear calipers together ensures balanced braking performance across the rear axle.
