What Does the Throttle Body Do?
The throttle body contains a circular butterfly valve that opens and closes to regulate airflow into the engine.
When the accelerator is pressed, the engine management system electronically controls the throttle body, opening the valve to increase airflow and closing it when less engine power is required.
A correctly functioning throttle body helps:
- Control engine intake airflow
- Maintain a smooth, stable idle
- Provide responsive acceleration
- Maintain consistent engine performance
- Support accurate engine management
Why Do Throttle Bodies Fail?
Throttle bodies are exposed to heat, vibration and contamination throughout their working life. Oil vapour and carbon deposits can accumulate around the throttle plate, while the electronic actuator and internal position sensors can deteriorate with age.
