A mass airflow sensor is used to determine the mass of air entering an electronically fuel-injected engine. The air mass information is necessary for the engine control unit (ECU) to calculate and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine. Air changes its density as it expands and contracts with temperature and pressure. In automotive applications, air density varies with the ambient temperature and altitude, and this is an ideal application for a mass sensor.
Fits:
Porsche 957 Cayenne V8 4.8L S / GTS MKII
What This Product Does
Also called a mass airflow or MAF sensor, this component measures incoming air by mass rather than volume alone. Its signal allows the engine control unit (ECU) to calculate the fuel quantity required for combustion. Air density changes with temperature, pressure and altitude, making accurate measurement important as operating conditions vary.
Functions
Measures intake-air mass, supplies airflow information to the ECU and supports fuel metering as engine demand changes.
Technical Details
Product type: air mass meter.
Brand: OE Match.
Application: 957 Cayenne S / GTS MKII, 4.8L V8.
Supplied diagram reference: 95560612340.
Symptoms of Fault
Possible signs include uneven idling, hesitation during acceleration, stalling, increased fuel consumption or reduced engine output. An engine warning light, airflow plausibility fault codes or irregular live airflow readings may also warrant investigation. These symptoms are not conclusive evidence of sensor failure.
Why Replacement Matters
An inaccurate airflow signal can lead the ECU to calculate an unsuitable fuel quantity. Replacing a confirmed faulty sensor addresses the measurement fault, but intake leaks, damaged wiring and corroded connectors should also be checked. Oil residue, moisture or dirt around the sensing element can contribute to unreliable readings.
FAQs
Can an intake leak cause similar symptoms?
Yes. Air entering downstream of the sensor can affect fuelling without being measured, so inspect the intake before replacing the meter.
Should a fault code alone justify replacement?
No. Use stored codes alongside live airflow data and checks of the electrical connections to establish the cause.
Can cleaning resolve the problem?
Light contamination may sometimes be addressed, but cleaning will not repair failed electronics or incorrect calibration. Confirm the fault before deciding whether replacement is required.
