What Does the Air Conditioning Compressor Do?
The air conditioning compressor is the primary mechanical component of the A/C system. Driven by the engine via the auxiliary drive belt, it compresses and circulates refrigerant through the condenser, receiver dryer, expansion valve and evaporator.
Its primary functions include:
- Compressing and circulating refrigerant throughout the air conditioning system.
- Providing cold air to the passenger compartment.
- Supporting rapid cabin cooling.
- Assisting with windscreen demisting and dehumidification.
- Maintaining efficient climate control performance.
- Helping improve passenger comfort in all driving conditions.
A correctly functioning compressor is essential for effective air conditioning performance.
Why Do Air Conditioning Compressors Fail?
Air conditioning compressors are subject to continual
operation, high pressures and temperature changes. Common causes of failure
include:
- Internal bearing wear.
- Compressor clutch failure.
- Lack of refrigerant lubrication.
- Internal piston or vane wear.
- Moisture contamination within the system.
- Debris from previous compressor failures.
